I am sure this has been kicked around a lot but I searched and did not find full satisfaction yet.

So ... I currently have an MS-210 ... but it is underpowered for what I want and the ratio of power to weight seems a bit off and the saw is a homeowner saw.

I plan on getting rid of it ... but want to get an excellent pro saw replacement for limbing and a rare climb or two.

Specs I want:
  1. Under 9 lbs [Prefer under 8]
  2. 39-42 cc's
  3. Run 3/8 x .050 16" w/ 3/8 x 7 rim sprocket.

Thus far I am looking for a 339xp and perhaps a 338xpt. [Though I don't prefer a top handle]

I need the 40cc class ... so that bumps stihl ...

Any other options out there?

Shindaiwa, Echo ... older poulans, I really don't care ... as long as they spec and are pro design saws ... and can be found in pristine shape.

TIA !!!

I dont think there is any under 9 lbs in a rear handle. The echos are 10 pounds but are not pro design, still a very nice saw though.

you can count out the echo then becasue the 370 is 36cc's but weights 10pds,, i don't think there is any 35-40cc saw out there that weights under 9pds

That is what I was suspecting ... though the 339xp comes in at #8.8 ...

Top handle isn't a big issue for me ... the weight and power ratio is however.
So it looks like I might have to go for the top handle design except for the 339xp ???

ya i dont think there is a 9lb rear handle. Why do you want it so light anyways, i mean whats another pound or so.

It is a matter of preference and wear and tear on my body.

I don't really want a 35cc saw and would just rather do away with anything under 39cc's ... but want the light weight for overhead or reach limbing.

I can sacrifice for narrow kerf, sprocket and chain ... but not power and weight.

Just want to end up with 4 saws and keep it there.

  • 1 40cc class saw
  • 1 50cc class saw w/16 and 20" bars
  • 1 65cc class tweener
  • 1 85cc class

if you want to stay out of the ER don't buy a saw to cut overhead...
maybe what you want to do is part of the reason you are having difficulty finding a saw... you have an 85cc saw in your line-up and you are concerned about a pound??? sorry you are not making much sense

Agreed.....

Well lets see. I have huge sockets and wrenches ... does it make sense for me to have 8mm wrenches ?

Big tools do big jobs ... small tools are job specific.

Make sense yet?:chainsaw:

Like I plan on cutting walnut limbs at an angle directly over my eye for fun?

I asked for help and suggestions not flame.
Overhead ... simply means higher than shoulder height with max reach.

Jeese.

Job specific you say? Sounds like you need a pole saw. 200T is not totally in your spec. range but it is a fantastic saw for climbing work.

Go with the 339XP, you won't regret it. I love mine, well worth the money in my opinion. Extremely lightweight, very quick to start and buzzes through anything less than 6" quite quickly.

Yeah ... I thought about that ... I appreciate your suggestion ... but I would use that pole saw so rarely and would just rather flop a ladder up and reach cut or climb if I have to.

Thanks so much for your help man ... It looks like it is "THE SAW" with no competitors in it's range.

yep man, a pole saw and if you use it alot maybe some kind of harness to take some weight of your hands. few kg won`t hurt your back as it would your hands; hands are not designed to be lifted up. the blood drains and you get tired soon.

Thats cool. For what its worth though, I climb and would never think of cutting from a ladder. Plain and simple it is really unsafe. Its very difficult to put yourself in the best position to cut. Lots of things can go wrong. A GOOD pole saw is really a useful tool to have and you may find that you use it often. By good, I mean a SIlky, Jameson, etc., not something from the Home Depot.
