I've been waiting for a decent 038 Magnum to make a project around for awhile and I finally got one about a month ago with a roached top end. It wasn't a cream puff, but decent enough to build a saw out of. I already had a nice cylinder from another parts saw and a new Episan piston from a good Ebay buy, so here is the finished product......There's just something about an 038 with a full wrap!:in-love:

I have just fired it and tuned it, so it'll have to wait for the weekend to give it a try in some wood.:msp_thumbup:

That is indeed a real cream puff. Did you repaint the covers? What all did you do to get it looking so cherry?

Congrats,

Olyeller

I painted the recoil and clutch cover and gave the dual port muffler a coat of high temp black. Other than that the rest is just cleaned up. The tank is from another saw (Which is another story in itself). I had a NOS recoil cover from an 056 with the original "Made in West Germany" tag, so I stole it to put the finishing touches on the recoil.

Mostly just elbow grease. It really sounds good and spools up smooth and fast with the HK Tillotson. I can't wait to cut with it.

Nice one

What are the specs on that thing? The onliest stihl I ever ran a lot was an 026. Some guy I worked for had it, used it about..hmm...4.5 years or so. Just for the "estate" use, I was caretaker. Did some trees for clearing and blowdowns and a little firewood with it.

What/how did you paint the covers? Looks real pro.

Olyeller

Thanks!!

It's just rattle can paint. It's Valspar (Plastikote here in Canada) Ford tractor grey. 1352 is the paint #. I wish it was a bit more durable, but it works pretty well and I've got a few saws that I have had out cutting wood with for awhile, that I used that paint and it's holding up not too bad

Did you buy the wrap new? There was a guy on ebay selling one for BIN $150. Last I checked (which has been a while) the dealer could get them new for around $95.

No, the full wrap was on the saw I bought with the toasted top end. I saw the guy's listing for that one on Ebay. I was thinking if he could sell one for that kind of money, I'd be switching this one for a half wrap.:)

I got to run my 038 today......Don't worry about the bit of smoke you see after it made it's first few cuts. It was just burning off some of the fresh paint on the muffler and the assembly oil. Can't wait until it seats the rings!!!!

I had a few loops of Oregon LPX safety chain that I need to use up, so that's what's on this saw in the video.....It actually cuts pretty decent!

Video..........

Awesome job! Love the full wrap, looks like it's running pretty good.
There was a gentleman selling one for $350 around here, he let me run it and I was impressed, couldn't talk him down though,I'm still waiting for my day to own one.

I've got one on lockdown right now. Guys wanting 400 bucks for it. He won't come down on it either. Saw is mint though. I mean minty mint and all original. Bottom of the saw mint and all. Like a brand new one. I guess I'm going to grab it up. I've been wanting one badly.

Around here, $350 would be average price for an 038 Mag, in "average" condition.....Personally, I think a "minty" one like you're describing for $400 is a darn good deal! Especially if you covet one!!:msp_drool:
