Hey all--

The more I look at a lot of threads, the more it seems that a few people have strongly advocated their own idea about a saw or series of saws, and then even though others have not used the saw, they continue to carry on the idea and insist that it is true.

I dont think it should be a requirement or anything, but I'm starting to think that we should make it more clear whether or not we have run the saw or whether we're just regurgitating the common opinion on the arboristsite.

I sometimes try to make it clear by saying "on paper" or "there are accounts that"...but really. Looking at the 441 thread and seeing all the 441 bashing. Has everyone run it? Just because someone comes and says I love my 460, if you didn't run a 441, you might want to put it out there.

I'm not accusing anyone in specific of anything but it seems like we're just having a big circlejerk a lot of the time without opinions actually developed in use.

Just a rant...but do people agree/disagree?

Mike

Sounds good to me, I try to put disclaimers as well but probably forget from time to time.

Perhaps, a duly-appointed A-S Official Inspector should visit each member location, inventory the saw holdings, and observe each and every one in operation.....

THEN, a Certificate-of-Authority-to-Comment can be issued for each particular saw, and said Certificate No. can be posted along with any comments.

Not disagreeing with the OP's premise, indeed, just injectin' what may prove to be some needed humor here, early.....

Your humor is well taken. I don't wish to say one has to own a saw to comment, but if someone looks at pictures of a 7900 online, and hears someone say it's awesome, it doesn't mean he should speak with authority on it.

If there's an either or question, and you've run the one you have and then heard people speak poorly of the other option, I'm still not convinced you can say yours favorite is better.

Mike

I like that idea. I think you make an excellent point referencing the 441 thread. I too feel it would make for better threads with more accurate info. It really makes ya stop and think about what your going to post. Im sure Im guilty of regurgitating the common AS opinions of saws i havent ran myself. Good thread!

I don't have a lot of posts, but do a lot of reading to learn on this site, so I do agree. When someone is asking a question about a particular saw, the responses should be based on actual experience with that saw unless noted otherwise.

Along that same line, when someone is asking for for assistance with a particular problem, such as a stuck chain brake, stripped bar stud or intermittent spark, for example, the posts asking, "how old is your fuel mix" don't add much value.

People are going to say what they want because they are at a keyboard. I always look at who is making the comment. I appreciate every members input/ opinion, but some members just stand out as more knowledgeable or spot on. I will say that I appreciate the huge reduction in spam threads. I don't know how it was accomplished, but good job.

naw, I disagree. Too many folks show up here and start asking some really basic questions on what saw to buy without doing any research on their own. It's a waste of time to answer because there are so many opinions. You need to just hang out and talk saws on here for a while and you'll get an idea of who knows what and how they came to know it. If folks would just start reading before asking questions they would get a feel for who has valid opinions. This is just like real life. You judge a person's character to decide on the validity of what they are saying.

Well said, Mike and I do agree.

I have heard rumors about the 441, good and bad, but have not commented, because I've never run one.

Now if y'all want to talk about the 346xp. Hahaha... :msp_tongue::msp_biggrin::msp_wink:

On the other hand I agree with this too......

Good point Mike

Definitely respect your fortitude and flame resistant skin for starting this thread and raising the issue.

That said, I still stand by my philosophy be it saws, guns, tractors, etc.

If you buy something based solely on some unknown self-proclaimed internet guru's comments or opinions instead of doing your own research and buying what you feel best fits your needs and/or budget, then you deserve whatever you get or just as important, whatever you don't get.

If you think saw posts are bad, visit some gun forums and read all the posts by the 12 year old Jason Bournes or Top Shot wannabes whose applications were rejected because they were too good to qualify for the show.

Take Care

I have used a 441 for years and I avoid using it if at all possible. I greatly dislike it. I have nothing good to say about it. It made me question whether or not all new Stihl saws would be crap. Biggest new saw disappointment evuh. I have not read a rumor or opinion about the 441 that is dissimilar to my experience with the 441.

I don't, I think this is what forums are for...asking questions. If I join a forum it isn't because I want to develope relationships online or spend countless hours reading, it is because I want to cut to the chase and find out the information I don't know about. I have joined many forums to do exactley that, and for better or worse I have gotten the answers I needed. I definatly spend the most time on the chainsaw forums because I like it and don't mind reading but some of the other forums I have applied to I don't care to become a 5 year member of and want to read or make 5,000 posts. Besides if no one asked questions no one would learn anything.

Yup hit the nail on the head:cheers:

:agree2: Too often I think people get flamed for asking a 'what saw to buy question' or information about a certain model. It is often the protocol for 'seasoned' AS members to scold, or demand a search be done--heck, pass over the thread if you do not want to respond. I think forums like this are about more than just keeping the die-hards entertained. Let the people ask questions! At the same time, it is ultimately up to the person in question buying the saw to decide what they think is valuable insight--so in the end, the buyer has to evaluate the 'research findings'.

I have owed a 262xp...(for 2 years and cut about 100cords of firewood with it...)

I have worked on 262xp's...

I have ran plenty of 262xp's...

So that being said...

I just don't see the following that saw gets...but that's my opinion and I will get flamed for it...oh well, so what, move on...

I do see your point and think that a person viewing these threads and posts has to have the common sense to understand that in every walk of life, there are...FANBOYS...

They are just chainsaws, the will break, and they will be replaced...

Use it, get over it, move on...We are only here for a very short time period, why waste our time worrying about what others think of a certain model chainsaw??

Is the 441 a junk/problematic saw? Not at all...are there better choices in most situations? Maybe not for everybody...<--see what I did there?.. :)

However there has to be something to them bringing the 440 back? It certainly didnt happen because some folks on AS were putting the 441 down as being a little big in the belly...

We are but a few that come here compaired to all of the chainsaw end users out there in the world...

Use what you want when you want and use what ever works to get the job done...

trouble is, when every other post is a 'what saw should I buy' the people that know about those saws stop answering the same question......and the ones left answering are in need of 'qualifications'

I would be more than happy to take it off your hands.
