Finally got out to cut a little wood. Had a guy drop it for me since it was very dead and by the road and power lines. He had a bucket truck and limbed it down first.

I got embarresed with the 7900 as when it came time to drop the trunk, it wouldnt start. Seems I cant get used to the on/off switch on it and really need my glasses more then I want to admit. It didnt help that we were in a little hurry to get it down before dark either.

I had to laugh when I was told " I should have bought a Stihl" as he grabbed the MS460 to drop the dang thing. As soon as the Stihl fired up I realized how stupid I was and flipped the switch to run on the 7900 and fired it off then. :hmm3grin2orange:

We used it to section the trunk up and the laughing was over when the Stihl man used it. I got lots more questions about it then. (he had never heard of Dolmar)

So besides the backwards working switch on the damn 7900, I like it alot. It feels good and pulls with good power and speed. Its a great improvement over the 460 in most areas. You just have to make sure the switch is on when you go to use it. :hmm3grin2orange:

I also used the 5100 alot on this one and I have to say I'm taking more of a shine to it then I had. I dont care what anyone says about the 3/8's setup on these, I like the 18" .325 with 20LPX alot on it for doing tops. Its very smooth and cuts fast as well.

This top was very dead, dirty etc and the 20LPX held up great, and it was still pulling good chips after cutting all the top mostly on sandy ground without sharpening.

I didnt take but just a couple pictures, I dont have time for that, but thought I would show them anyway.

Mark,i cut with dolmars and husky's,i do the same thing all the time !! LOL !!
was thinking about trying to reverse the switch or put a husky one in so both the same :)

Jeez, I'd really love to have a 7900 next to my 5100.
The Dolmar switch isn't backwards. All the other saws have their's backwards. LOL
Seriously, down for off feels more natural to me.

Nice picts Mark, thanks for posting them. Your trees look short and wide compared to what I am used to working with. I would have cut them down and chunked them up with my Stihls also...LOL

So it aint just me then!

No the 7900's is backwards.

The switch on the 5100 is the one thing that I hated on it from the get go. I dont like the Stihl style one lever like this at all but I have to say the Dolmars is correct that down is off on it, so that makes all the Stihls backwards.

I know one thing for sure though, if I was in charge, all saws would have the controls laid out like a Poulan Pro 330 etc. Switch on top the handle, choke on the left and throttle lock with your right thumb. Simple, feels right, everythings in reach with or with out gloves and it just plain works well.

Jerry, they are shorter then yours, but there hard and good burning and some get pretty darn big around. This one is a decent size, it was just a little over 30" at the bottom. I hauled the trunk home in 2 piece's and it was good load.

That picture is pointing north and just south of there is a nice 80-100 ft Oak that is over 40" ( I'm guessing) and is dying from Oak wilt. If I get into that one, I will need help as there will be lots and lots of wood in it. Sounds like a NW Indiana firewood GTG! :msp_wink:

I'm not knocking the Stihls, I have been maintaining the fellas saws for sometime and I'll tell you the 460 is one of the good ones. The air filters suck, but that saw has made him alot of money. He also got a new 200T that I got a chance to finally check out and I have to say that it impressed me and that is not a easy thing to do.

To me the 460 dont live up to the super star status around here to me, but the 200 might just do that.

Haha you got that problem 2??? lol i own both stihl and dolmar and im constantly confused

You know Mark, I am more impressed each time I run my 681. Thru 25" seasoned oak its as every bit as fast if not a hair faster than my 660. I have the 7900 AV mounts to go on her as well. They really are fine saws.

Do the same thing. Got so used to stihls set up I'm always choking the 5100 off. My 6400 is just different and was a matter of learning where everything was. Have to agree about putting everything like my old poulans have it.

Backward? Yes... And it's worth it!!! I like the 7900 so much, I'm thinking I see the 5100 in my future... But every neighbor I got thinks I'm odd, so take that for what it's worth...:msp_wink:

Amen to that !!

Since you have both, how does the 5100 compare to the 330?

Thanks for the pics Mark. Nice saws for sure. Whats that in the right corner with the tag on it???

Oh yeah. Stop kicking my ms460.

Seriously though I understand what you are saying about the superstar status of certain saws around here. The 046/460 is beginning to lose it's shine these days it seems though. The Husqvarna 372 and the Dolmar 7900 are getting the attention they deserve.

Thats a loaded question isnt it? :msp_biggrin:

Don't make me disapoint a bunch of people with facts. :msp_biggrin:

The one in the corner is a Husky 141 that I though in there in case I dulled a bunch of chains and needed it. I didn't...

Yeah, I'm not knocking the 460, there good ones, but after hearing so much around here, they didn't live up to the hype for me.

The one not getting enough attention around here to me is not the 372, its the 575-576XP.

To be honest, since I had the 575 to begin with, the 7900 was somewhat of a upgrade but not for the cost.

A pretty darn nice 2 saw plan there Mark!

I would take those 2 and either my 401 or my 3410 and go to the woods with ANYBODY!
Sure wish you and those saws were here to help me with this 50"+ Pin Oak!!!
Guess I'll have to put the 084 to work.

I'm feeling better now that I know its not just me.

I once saw a DEALER of both Husky and Dolmar pull on a 6400 'til he was out of breath.
I flipped the switch on, pulled it one time and when it fired, I thought I was gonna get thrown out of his shop!!!
Probably would have if he wasn't already out of breath!!!

...........

I have done that with my 5100S, and even managed to flood it in the process....:givebeer:

Oregon LP/LPX is very well working and comfortable chain to use, and I never had any problems with it dulling faster than any other chain I use (most notably Stihl RSC). I have found LP to be a bit faster than RSC in .325 (both new chain), and it should last longer, as the cutters are longer. I have not been able to compare directly in 3/8, as I use them in different gauges (.058 vs .063), but LP is both faster and smoother than LGX.

None of the differenses really matter for practical work though, I am happy with all those designs!

Lastly, I agree with you on preferring .325 on 50cc saws!

Seriously, down for off feels more natural to me.

The only fool-proof switches are the ones on some smaller Huskys/Jonsereds (346 and 357 families) - I have to look at what I am doing on all other saws, as there just are too many variants....:givebeer:

Once I had the switch off on my 7900, and I flooded it so bad that it wouldn't start for an hour.

You should get the HD filter kit for it. The stock filter is cheezy, and way too small.
