Amazon.com: Makita Model DCS 6421 Chainsaw with 20" Bar & Chain: Home Improvement

Done. Sold by a site sponsor through amazon to boot. I would probably take the DCS510 over the 450/460 despite the performance/weight factor. I don't think you could go wrong with any of the three.

I like it. However, since it isn't sold by Amazon, I can't get it here by tomorrow.

It looks like it might be a good saw to go with a 346XP with a 16" bar as part of a two saw combo (which is my goal eventually).

Just buy any of them and go cut wood! It just don't matter, any of them saws will cut wood. BWAHAHAHA I cut for years and years with 10 and 20 buck junkers, and I am going out this afternoon to cut with a 40 dollar junker (freekin inflation bites!) more HAHAHAHAHA

New saws are ALL freeking ridiculous overpriced anymore. I don't care what they are, or who makes them. IMO of course, but dang if I would pay more for a saw than a used truck that runs! They are just off the scale out to lunch nutso with new saw prices. I have bought two new ones in my life, and just slap ain't gonna do that anymore. I don't care even if I hit the lottery, I don't want to encourage those sorts of prices for a small two stroke anything.

You got a giftcard, go buy a saw. Shazam, the wood ain't gonna care a bit what color that saw is or what nation it was allegedly built in. Get one from the list cheap enough you can get some extra chains and some chaps, and still fit in the budget with that giftcard. That should be the criteria.

And if the diff in a lb or two this way or the other is such a deal breaker, dang, then any saw is gonna be too heavy and clunky to use. I'm a little bitty guy, if one lb makes such a difference to guys half my age and twice my size and weight...geez loweez....

I can see being real dang picky if you are a pro 7 days a week logger/cutter, and it is all tax deduction and production per hour or tank of fuel, etc, OK, be picky then, but for casual use..just about any brand new saw off the shelf from anywhere will cut one guy's generic wood. Ya, even them cheapo "box store" saws.

Don't know if it's been mentioned in this thread, but if you get the 60 cc Makita/Dolmar, you can bolt on an 80 cc piston/cylinder for a power:weight ratio that is legendary on this site.

Best 50cc saw sold by Amazon

Is the Solo 656 or the 651sp. I know that you had said earlier that you don't know about Solo saws but I do and they build great saws I own 2 681's and love them light weight and run better stock than any saw that I have ever ran and I have been Logging and running saws everyday for about 14 years now. Stihl 066's first then Husqvarna 395xp's after that. By the way toughest saw made today 395's. But as I get older the saws that I use keep getting smaller and lighter and the is why I bought Solo's and a Makita 6401 that is now a Treeslingrized 7901 they run like a mix between a 372 and a 390 and they weigh as much as a 460 Stihl so they are my one saw plan and my plan is working great. Back to your question I would say that if I had to choose from your choices that I would pick the Makita DCS510 good saw, but if the rules are a 50ish cc saw that you can buy from Amazon.com I would without any doubt buy the Solo 656 even if you have to throw in a few $ it's worth it great runnig saw a tough as nails I really believe if you would give that saw a chance you wouldn't even buy or want a 346 they are 56.6 cc and around 12.6lbs and 4.5 HP and they have lots of torque I would run a 20" bar and chain combo. If I where you I would make it a point to at least check it out before you made a decision my second choice would be a Makita DCS6421 I have owned 2 of these saws and they are impressive stock and you can upgrade them to a larger displacement if you would like to. But then again the 656 is a compareable saw to the 6421 out of the box . So please take what I have said into consideration and check on the Solo 656 before you add to cart.

A few years ago Bailey's had a bunch of those Solos on sale. If I hadn't already bought the Efco from a settlement pump, I would have bought that 656 Solo. Really looked nice. I think I read somewhere they are made side by side with the Dolmars. Thank you Emil Lerp!

I have put off the decision for one more day. I can still have it here Friday.

It looks like I will spend Thanksgiving day finishing up putting some conduit in the ground and pulling some electrical cable. Friday will be spent doing a bunch of wiring, so probably no sawing until Saturday.

You see, and thats what those tall humpback Husqvarnas look like to me. As you say, its all a matter of taste.

At least they aren't yet another red. orange, or orange/red saw. Nothing wrong with those colors, but if you think about it, seems most every body that makes a pro grade saw uses a variation of red.
Stihl, Dolmar, Husky, Echo, Solo, Jonsereds, Efco, Olympyk, etc..etc... all some form of red.

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Since Dolmar was the first to produce a portable gas powered chainsaw in 1922, everyone has been playing catch up. :D Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

Of the ones you listed I'd go with the Dolmar 510. I own a 346xp so I am a little partial to Huskies but the models you listed are not of the same quality as the Dolmars you listed. I have never run a Solo but I have heard great things about them. The little mom and pop dealer down the road from me sells Dolmar and Efco and he did sell Solo too, not sure iof he still does but when he did he really spoke highly of them. They were more money though.

As someone mentioned the 64cc Dolmar can be upgraded to a 80cc with a big bore kit so it might make the most sense for now but it looks like it's sold by Bailey's through Amazon, not sold by Amazon. Too bad because it would fill your need for a saw now and fit into your long term plans by converting into a big saw and you can go get the 346xp later. If you could make that scenario work I'd go that direction.

Ok, say I get the 64cc Dolmar / Makita.

Is there a better choice for my smaller / lighter limbing saw than the 346XP?
