I have the opportunity to buy a homelite 550 without a bar and chain for $50 which supposedly "runs great". Is this a good enough deal to take? I would like to use it for my primary saw but are these more of a collector's item than a usable saw?

The real question is "Why haven't you already bought it?"

The 550 is a pro-grade saw and would be fine for regular cutting.
Parts are still abundant in the secondary market.
You better go get it.

Mmmm... the only thing holding me back is #1) already spent my Christmans money - so would have to run it by the wife :eek2: #2) No chainbrake on this model from what I understand #3)would need add'l monies for bar and chain...

Am I being unreasonable?

Chain brake? no big deal.....

Bar and chain is extra, but it takes the same one as the 360. There are blown 360's on Ebay all the time with nice bar and chain. Also, it is just a fairly popular mount anyway.

Roanoker is right, that is a $100+ saw you are looking at, if it is what the seller says. Very powerful and reasonably light weight. Easy to work on. Get it, and if you don't like it, run it on the classifieds here. Somebody will buy it, and you can turn a small profit.

I'm sure one of us would give you $100 + shipping for it.

THIS POST SAY"S IT ALL!!!!!

He doesn't have a bad case yet = asking us if it's ok :chatter:
Not a real saw guy yet = NO CHAIN BRAKE:msp_thumbdn:
Asking his wife..... well I'll let you decide.

Pullin your leg.... its a good deal! But I'll bet someone may already have it, you took to long and posted it here for everybody to see.

Okay, guy still has it - wife was a little hesitant but is okay with the $$$...

So real quick like: even w/o a bar and a chain you guys think it's still worth it? Looks like I'd have to fork out an additional $50+ (on the low end) for bar and chain - not counting anything else that might need replacing... you guys still think it's worth it if it runs okay?

Can't speak for them, but I would think one of the Homie guys here on that sticky thread or the swap meet would have a used bar and maybe some loops for less than another 50 bucks. Or check the classifieds here.

edit: heck, I bet someone here who is saw rich would outright swap you for a newer albeit smaller more modern saw that is intact and has modern antivibe and a chainbrake.

I will make ya a deal, since it is tax time and I have some money heading my way. If the saw runs, has good compression and has no major corrison I will give you $100 for it if you decide not to keep it. I will even send you a box, packing materials and a prepaid shipping label to ship it to me.

I'd buy it even if it didn't run.
If you get it, I would go through it before running it. The rubber probably needs to be replaced. Of greatest concern would be the intake boot. You'll smoke the piston quick if that boot is leaking, and it probably is.

Better hurry. Otherwise I am gonna call the guy, paypal him, and have Roanoke take care of the entire drop ship process for a quick 50 bucks profit ;).
