A hard starting new saw is trying to tell you something. I have a 290 and the only time it has died is when it runs outta gas. I would do as others have said since they have lightyears more experience than I and take it in to the dealer to have it checked out. A video of you trying to start the saw would help in determining if there is a problem with it also.

Yeah im thinking it may be a good idea to bring it in, just in case. They said they went through it and everything was fine when I went to pick it up. I actually bought it on monday and they kept it overnight to "go through it" before I picked it up..Hmmm.

Dealer kept it overnight?

Just take it back and let them tell you what is up. 290's are easy starters, and yours should not even be broken in yet. If your starting technique is the problem they'll let you know. I am a little concerned that it quit in the middle of a cut. That is almost always bad unless it is out of gas. Also sounds strange that they "kept it overnight" to get it ready. It is a 5 minute procedure to deliver a 290. All it requires is fuel and oil to be added, and the cutting attachment to be installed. There are several dealers and industry folks right here on AS to offer advice, so you're in the right place.

I stick to my first post on the topic, his carb needs to be adjusted at least, he likely has it set too rich. Take it back to the dealer, let him look at it. Might need the metering lever checked, maybe a loose welch plug.

If a saw stalls from running too rich, it is likely flooded, hence the rope is harder to pull, because fluids won't compress......

No LOL involved.

If it was seized, or the bearings locked up, then it would feel rough with the plug out.

Just gota know how to 'talk' to them!

A hard starting saw in general that is not supposed to be, is trying to tell him something.

But....it's all relative...Some guys have trouble starting my Pouland 2550 (not a big saw at all only 40cc http://www.acresinternet.com/cscc.n...28b088256d6200101c98?OpenDocument).......they can be tugging and tugging.....I walk over and give it a quick pull or two.....and it's running....just gota know how to 'talk' to them! LoL! :blob2: :yoyo:

I'm thinking the OP just has a 'learning curve'.

If the trouble persists....take it back to the dealer and start it (or attempt to) with someone watching/helping. You'll get it figured out.

it did kinda blow a little smoke this AM when it started up, maybe it is too rich. and just so everyone knows, its a used saw they had, said it was bought, used for just a couple months and then traded in for a bigger saw. They told me they wanted to keep it over night to go through it and make sure everything was how it should be with it. I will bring it in to them though. it does start but it is still hard to tug with all the compression, maybe ill give the brand new one on the shelf a few pulls to compare.

Jeesh, some of you guys even read his post?

OP has now said it was a USED saw at least 3 times.

I would take it back to the dealer and explain your concerns. Have them run it in a test log, shut it off and restart it a couple times, you run it in a test log shut it off and restart a couple times. If the dealer is worth anything the problem should be easily diagnosed.

Grab the starter handle and pick the saw up by it, it should hold then drop a few inches then stop then drop again.I have never seen a ms290 that will hang and not slowly drop. it could be as simple as a dirty starter recoil. I would be getting the saw checked out either way.

congrates on the new saw.

thanks!

I see nothing wrong there....other than the guy is a complete idiot.

Maybe thats it... Im an Idiot...lol,lol,lol... but see how the saw is like, actually sorta jumping off the ground when he pulls it? thats mine. put it this way, there is no way in heck id ever be able to just hold the saw in one hand and pull it with the other.. not that your supposed to but ..well, im sure you know. lol

Just pull it like it owes you something I bet there is nothing wrong with the Saw!

That video was hard to watch. you might just be catching the piston at the top of the compression stroke when trying to start it. when I was younger after school I was the ground crew for my dad, so I was the gas and start and check man while he was in the trees, never had a problem starting them back then (10yrs old and a 044). I would still have it checked out though

Nothing meant towards you, unless perhaps that was you in the video? I doubt it was. Dudeman actually put both feet on the saw, 1 on the back handle and one on the top, looked like he almost fell on it. Fortunately he had the brake set as we saw when he tried to rev it up, another no no with a cold saw, let alone with the brake set.

Saws will be a touch harder to pull when they are cold such as it is now, someplaces.

so i came home, went out and had a talk to the saw, put on the choke, pulled it like 3 times and it fired right up. Let it idle for like 20 secs then gave it a few spurts on the throttle and set to cut a nice size log in half, length wise... the saw ate straight through it like a champ.. after cutting a couple more, i shut ti down, waited a few minutes, maybe 2 or 3 then put it to run, pulled it once and it fired up. I guess I was just thrown by the amount of compression it has over my other two saws. Oh i did the hang it by the rope test the "Cutforfun" reccomended and it did exactly as he said it should. it dropped, stopped for a couple seconds and dropped again.. what i love best is the sound this saw makes, compaired to my Husky, this saw almost sounds like a 4 stroke, its like a louder version of my 4 stroke weed wackers!!! lol
