I'm not sure what to get, I was talking to my dealer and he gets 940 for a 440 mag with a 20 inch bar, but he has a 460 in stock with a 20 inch bar for 999, what does everyone think? I'm wondering if there's a huge difference b/ w he 2 saws? Thanks for the opinions

I was leaning that way too, with only a $60 difference I figured the 460, i figured I would buy this before they change the design , or I should say before they stop making it . As far as tuning goes are they difficult to tune?

Where in NY are you? around here you can ussually get them down to at least 900 for a MS460. Southern tier here.

What are you going to use the saw for? If you're only running a 20" a 440 might be the better option. If you're going the 460 route, get the new 461.

Right in the capital actually , everyone around here seemed to have about the same price, but I have one more place to check a lil west of me, I have a 25 inch bar on my 360 and I can tell its 2 much for the saw it kinda bogs a little so I figured I would get the next step up and put the 25 on that for big wood( in my terms) that's all I really was looking to use it for. They had both in stock last time I was here gettin parts and it sparked my interest .

Treat it like a car dealership. "I really wanted the 440, but I'll take the 460 of your hands for the price of the 440, since that's the one you have in stock."

Is there a big diff b/w the 460 and the 460r?

High output oil pump, large felling dawgs with roller chain catcher, 3/4 wrap handle and an oversized clutch cover.
Todays saws don't seem to put out a lot of bar oil. I run a 25" bar on my 460 R and and it lubes it well.

Get the 460 Mag! Its got another half horsepower stock... I have run a 28" a 25" and a 20" on it. I like the 25" the best, but I have had the 28" buried and it has no problems pulling it! Buying the 440 is like buying a new camaro and getting the LS model with a V6 and not buying the SS with the V8!

(P.S. I could be biased as I have a 460 magnum..)

They should give you a healthy discount on the "old model" 460 since you can get a 461 now. The 461 is a bit more saw for the same price around here. But the 460 is the way to go over a 440 for a small price difference. The 460 holds its used value better too, selling for $100-$150 more used over a 440.

I've got both, and if I were buying a new saw in that class tommorrow it would be a MS461, the 440 and 460 are both discontinued what is on the dealer shelves is pretty much it, the 461 is definetly stronger than the 460 and in modded form I'd say it has more potential, in stock form it is still stronger than the stock 440 or 460 and will use 15-20% less fuel.

I agree with many who said 460. I have run many of both, even owned a sweet 044 for years, later run almost identical to the 440 magnum. There is a differenve between the 440, and 460 night and day no. But it's there. I always said I wouldn't sell a 44-440 I already had, just to buy a 460. But between buying of the two I would go 460 anyday, more saw for the money, some complain of the slight weight difference over a 440, well you get that with more saw, that is also slightly more heavy duty, build wise. But they are close. Start with more saw for your money, and modifications as mentioned can be done, and are great, but when you just spend 1100 out the door on a saw, do you want to throw more money out that soon, to modify? Up too you I guess if you have it. But start with enough saw that will keep you happy for awhile. Which either the 440 or 460 would.

Well it looks like im gonna go for the 460 and low ball them cuz of the 461. Im gonna throw the 25 on it and see how she goes, as far as modding im already readin up on that haha so well have to see how it works out tomorrow and ill let you guys kno whta i ended up payin, thanks everyone for the help !!

Heyyyy i live in Albany too... Out past delmar. I thought i was the only person in Albany county who is on this site lololol. Anyways, have you gotten prices from WD in halfmoon? When i bought my 440, they were the only dealership in this area that would sell just the power head. Needless to say thats where i go for all my stihl saws.

Shop all the Dealers on a new 461. Better mileage, more power, should have better re-sale. Buy the Stihl Ultra oil for an extra year of warranty. Here they are the same or just a tad more $ than a 460.
