+1. The HT is added bulk and weight. Not necessary for most applications. I actually think the saw looks better as a low top personally.

If there is anyone that can link us an IPL for the 288 I would send ya some rep!

Philbo,

You need a 288 deflector to mod that muffler. The problem I see is that with where the mounting holes are drilled, I don't think a deflector is going to cover the hole he mangled up for a second port. You might just get a piece of sheet metal and form your own.

I wouldn't waste the money on a HT AF, I don't think it's necessary.
That hole was cut and drilled using a 288 deflector. It mounts up perfectly just was not smoothed out.

I worked a little on smoothing the hole out tonight. Got a husky deflector on order from Baileys (do screws come with it?) Didn't say 288 specifically so hopefully it'll fit. I also got the top cover roughly trimmed up so it's not burning underneath anymore.

MM question: If I'm using a Dremel to smooth out this hole, what would be the best head/attachment to use?

Booger,

East TN? You gotta be the fella I bought the saw from, no?

Also, just for the sake of this thread since this was originally a value thread, I paid $300 for the saw, bar and chain. I mistakenly typed $275 in one of earlier my posts, but that's what I offered originally for it. We settled on $300 w/ bar and chain, which I think is a very fair deal for me if all goes well.

Good score

Like that B&C. I just picked up a 288 w/full wrap bar, 24" B&C. Lot of saw.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to running it once I get the muffler up to snuff.

What brand is the full wrap on yours? I looked online a little last night for 3/4 and full wraps that'll fit a 288. Only thing I could find was on Baileys; there was a full-wrap, no brand or picture for around $120 or so. Anybody know what it actually is?

I checked out the Madsens site, but I should probably just call them and ask specifically.

I don't think a 288 deflector is going to cover the "hole."

+1- I'd fab.:msp_wink:

Philbo- did you determine if you bought the saw from an AS member? Thought I saw the possibility of this in a post 4 or 5 ago? Booger?

I have two Pro Saftey full wraps for 181/281/288's I'd sell. Also have one for a 064/066 that is missing the hardware.

Not sure, but I'm thinking yes.

Yes the saw was mine. Im sure with just a little effort the muffler will turn out good with a deflector. Either way its nothing hard to clean up.
new parts on saw

all rubber av except one
new ring
ignition including wires
fuel line
carb kit
new bar and chain never sharpened
new muffler
everything was oem and nos and no port modifications. Has not even ran a half a tank since new parts.

Ran the 288 today and got the carb tune dialed in a bit more. This saw is a beast! I'm appreciating the decomp valve...

On deck, I've got the outside felling spike to mount and the deflector to put onto the muffler...expecting a package from Bailey's before the weekend :D Maybe it will be obvious when I get the spike in my hands, but I'm not really seeing anything to screw it on to on/near the clutch cover. EDIT: Nevermind...just realized that they fit on bar studs...duh

Question: What's the consensus on spark arrestor screens on MMs? The stock "jungle" muffler outlet doesn't have a screen on it. My 044 muff doesn't, but the MMed 346 I got from nmurph has a very nice screen/side deflector setup. I'll do some reading and researching myself, but figured I'd ask the question here. What's the best material to use and the best way to mount the screen to the muffler?

Also got a full-wrap handle in the mail (thanks srcarr52/Shaun!) Should handle a little better sideways with it.

I took the saw over to a wood-cuttin' buddy's house this afternoon and fired it up to flush cut a 25" maple stump that he wanted cut down. Like butter...I bet he wishes he was wearing some hearing protection though afterwards... I warned him it was a bit loud and I was working on the muffler...

Since this is a 288 thread that is current, I would like to ask a question.

I received my parts order from Baileys today which included both the inner and outer dawgs for my 288. The saw had the inner but was missing the outer, for the price though I decided to order both so that they would match. I also needed the small bolt and nut that holds the outer dawg to the cover. Baileys showed that it is on back order:

Back Order Information:

QTY ITEM Description AMOUNT

1 HVP 725 53 42 55 SCREW MC6S 5X55 2.99

So I am going to the local dealer to pick up the parts. I pulled up 2 IPL's for the 288xp online and there is a discrepancy in the part #'s. The first IPL shows the bolt to be 725 53 27 56 and the nut to be 503 22 20-01. The other 288IPL shows the bolt to be 725 53 27 55 and the nut to be 503 22 24-01. I am not sure if one is an updated # or if there is actually a difference? Both of the bolt #s are different than Bailey's #. My 288's serial # is 6260407 if that helps.

Thanks in advance:rock:
