I see the 250 and 290 as mainly price point saws. Also most dealers tend to push those saws. And for most people they aren't a bad choice. A 290 looks like a big saw even though it isn't so maybe visuals add to the sales?

Yep, That 290 is a comletely different animal than the 346.

Since the 028 has been completely rebuilt, MMed and ported it is a completely different animal too than the 346 when the bar is buried in oak. I've got an 8 pin on it now for the .325. We've been cutting dirty skidded logs and I have a bunch of chains/bars for it.

But a 7 pin for the 18" 3/8ths 50 gauge that is too nice to use.

I've got my buddies MS290 over here to do some maintenance and grind the chain for him. Since it was on the bench I was astonished at just how heavy and big this beast is. It weights a good 2# more than my 028 Super which is almost 25 years old. You would think that Stihl would make saws lighter/smaller rather than bulkier and heavier with modern technology.

Just look at the relative size:

if you are going to stir up the crap, at least be sensable about it. why dont you compare an ms260pro to the 346xp, and then a 455 rancher to the ms290. that might actually show a fair comparison. :deadhorse:

Actually the 455 is a .2lbs lighter than a ms290. They are both fat biatches

I would bet that is *exactly* what it is, marketing appeal. Its a big saw so of course it is manly and macho, must have! Farm and wood BOSS, its the BOSS SAW. No fooling around,, why this here saw will get that tough job done!!! And it is affordable, why, its cheaper then them little bitty saws over yonder on the shelf, them girly man saws with the cute white handles! But wait, theres more! Comes with a MANLY baseball cap! And a I dont dial 911 sticker!

Meh, do it crank and run, my only criteria. I simply dont care for the advertising drivel on tools, on or around them. Ford chevy dodge, meh. . Few lbs here or there, double meh. Good enough saws to work OK, not too expensive.

The other one that gets me is the bar size, OMG it has a 20 inch bar! Must be a full blown PRO saw!!! Thats box store and craigslist advertising.

Just stirring the pot because I'm bored. Guess I'll head down to the bar and start a fight:msp_ohmy:

My question is how can a saw made mostly(290/310/390) of plastic weigh so much?

In Stihl's 066/660 is relatively lightweight considering 90cc+. Likewise, the 026/260 was a really nice package.

My 3120 powerhead weighs as much as my 066/660 with 25" B&C.:dizzy:
