Hi all,

I have been tinkering with an 026 that sat for a few years, would not run before that. I broke it down, P&C look good, all sealed etc. Cleaned and rebuilt carb, new inpulse line, new fuel line, new plug, New filter, fresh gas. Carb has H,L and Idle. Turned out H and L 1.25 turns, saw fires up, Can tune the L and H, runs WOT Great, will idle super fast but I cannot get it to idle correctly. I will get it as slow as it will go before it stalls and the chain is still spinning pretty fast. Also, if I engage the chain brake it stalls right out.

Any ideas what else to look for or try? Thanks for any ideas!

What does the clutch look like. I would check for a broken spring or dirt behind the clutch shoes that is stopping them from releasing.

X2 on that. Sounds just like one of these two issues. Possibly just worn out clutch springs, but sounds more like a broken spring or dirt/junk buildup holding the clutch shoes to the sprocket drum.

I am not saying that you don't have an air leek , but it sounds more like clutch issues to me. Does the chain spin when you try and start the saw.

I'll check the clutch tomorrow, I honestly don't know if the chain spins when starting. I didn't even notice and its dark now so I'm done for the night. Thanks for the idea, I will report back!

No need to get a new clutch. Just get some new clutch springs and a needle cage bearing for that sprocket.

Yup. Lube up the bearing real good, clean up the clutch pack, install new springs, good to go.

The springs are just over $2.00 here and the bearing will run around $10. Sounds like an easy fix. Remember the clutch is left hand threads (righty tight won't work here). Get a piston stop at the Stihl store its plastic and you will need to remove the spark plug and insert it in the cylinder so you can stop the stroke in order to remove the clutch. Take your time, remove the clutch, replace the springs (I use a small pick to install them), install the greased bearing, put on your clutch drum, washer and eclip and GET TO WORK! :D

Clutch repaired and tuned the carb. Cut some cookies and she purrs like a kitten. Throwing bar oil like a bastard but when I looked at the oil it looks like the previous owner has light motor oil in it. Going to use the rest of it up, there is only about a 1/4 cup n it and refill with bar oil and see if that is the problem and go from there. Thanks for the tips on the clutch :blob2: I'll try to figure out how to give rep.

Glad you got it fixed. If it is the standard 026 it's really going to oil. The worm gear starts as soon as the crankshaft is turning. (There is no carrier to match the sprocket cup on this series). Therefore, it oils the whole time it is running. Which is not a bad thing, congrats on getting the saw going. Happy Sawing!
