Which of these saws will respond best to woods porting?

It is really your choice. If you cut a lot of bigger wood, 30" and up, then the 372 makes some sense. They are a blast to run (read- really loud) and can slice thru the bigger stuff with ease.

If your wood is mostly 24'' and smaller, you don't really need a 70cc saw. All trees get the 346xp, only some qualify for the 372 or 385. I specifically look for the biggest ones because I like the challenge and like running the ported 70+cc saws. Lots of big dead ash out there, some 40", and that is where the 372 will shine.

Have a sense of humor, folks. Lighten up, it is just the interwebs.

If we want to rag on anyone, rag on OP for asking the same darned question that has been asked hundreds of time before.

Anyone game for an oil thread now?

Has this question been asked hundreds of times before? If so, my apologies. I looked for quite some time for a thread that compared porting results of these three saw side by side, with no results. But if there are hundreds out there, please by all means, point me in the right direction.

The 346 is known to respond very well to porting..

Not sure what size of trees you cut, but I use my 545 90% of the time, until the wood gets too big for the bar. I seldom bring out the 066 anymore, it's just too heavy and clumsy. I think you'll find that porting the 346 will narrow the gap between it and the 372, and you might not even want the 562.

I vote for the 346. A lightweight hot rod is the best way to go.

Your question is a bit different than the norm and hasn't been asked just like this hundreds of times. It's all good.

I cannot imagine how the 346 could make the drastic gains that everyone is raving about. It's already a mean little saw!

Maybe I just need to wait until there is a GTG in the New England area so I can try out a few ported saws....

I really appreciate all of the constructive contributions to this thread. I'm not trying to be repetitive, just trying to tap into the unending knowledge that this forum offers. I'm sure that there are many people on AS that have run ported versions of all these saws. I however, have not run any ported saws.

The 346xp is a factory hot rod and they cut well stock. Delete base gasket (if squish allows) and a muffler mod and you will be impressed. Porting these things is more about dropping the cylinder to gain compression, then working the ports over to get the timing back where it's best. The stock quad ports are very close to perfect as they are. Very impressive runners when ported right!!!

Not my vid but believe...

Mr. Giggles was getting close to what I believe is the best answer.

For me, I'd sell the 562 and have the 346 and 372 ported.
If you have a ported 346 you will have no use for the 562.

Mike

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! The first time in the history of AS, that people are trying to talk others from a 3 saw plan down to a 2 saw plan!! Lol What is the world coming to?

I really never thought about it, but you make a good point... If I were to sell the 562, it would free up enough money to have the 346 AND THE 372 ported.... I'll have to give that some thought

just do muffler mods save 900 bucks :) ported saws are fun I have a couple :) them are all nice saws

W/O reading all the posts, I would have the 372 ported, they are beasts ported, and that will let it handle the bigger bars better. The other two already have adequate power for the bars U R using. A ported saw makes a big time saving difference when bucking large wood.

The other two saws also respond well to porting, I've run ported ones at GTGs and they are impressive. That said, the 346 would be second choice IMO.

Very nice 3 saw plan, I would keep all 3, no questions asked!

Get that 372 ported and when U pull the trigger U will wear a grin for a long time.

Ran my first ported saw at a GTG in the spring, and now I have 2 of them. While all 3 of UR saws will respond well to porting, I think that saw will reflect the biggest percentage difference.

I repaired a 346 NE for a customer, it was a real healthy running saw when I finished. Then a few months later I built my own ported 346/353, MAN was I surprised!!!
An ms361 STIHL looks like a turd after running this saw!

His 372 is an XT saw. Those do pretty good ported but the difference isn't as much as when the non-XT saws are ported. His money would probably be better spent porting one of the other saws.
