I ran over my awesome setup MS460 about a month ago with the delimber and ruined it.

I've been using "shop saws" to tied me by. I have a 360 getting ported and a 036 being shipped. Shop saws being a MS290, Husky 2100, Husky 570, and a Poulan Pro (when they were still decent saws).. forget the model off hand. Also have a big Dolmar and a Jonsered, I forgot the models, they are 70-80cc saws.

All cut the wood, but that 460 was like having a good pair of work boots or that just right worn in sofa or pair of jeans. I'd often walk across the yard just to grab my 460 (log yard is 5+ acres) instead of using whatever happened to have been left by the log pile or need the skid steer. Maybe some of it being it was the first saw I bought when I started getting serious into logging.

I stopped by the dealer, thinking hard about buying a brand new one. I can't. They aren't made anymore I'm told.

That true?!

If so, I'm looking for a nice 460.

Mine had a 3/4 wrap handle, dual port muffler, woods port, big felling dawgs (Stihl ones, like the 660 uses), "R" oiler and clutch cover, HD air filter setup (or whatever it's called... the better one).

Well received,

General consensus of the local loggers and per diem hired guns like myself, is the MS461 is indeed an upgrade to the old MS460. Dealer has a bunch of them out working everyday in forestry, firewood, land clearing and of course arborist work and the saw has proven reliable. Like any saw they develop issues when dropped, smashed, or run over, and that's the primary repairs. Everybody likes the extra 10 plus minutes run time per tank. Power band is really broad. Excellent saw for felling.

MS461 is not M-tronic and this seems to appeal to a lot of MS460 users. I really don't care about M-tronic one way or the other as long as the saw starts and makes me money.

Run mine with an 8-pin and either 20 or 25 inch bar depending on the job at hand.

Other than cleaning the air filter every 2 or 3 tanks, (if you're running a MS460 you should be used to that) not much else is needed.

I demoed one for a week courtesy of Stihl rep before purchase. Contact dealer and I'll wager they can get you one to try prior to purchase.

If something happened to mine, I'd get another in a heartbeat.

Hope this helps

Take Care

Local has one near me. Looks darn near out of box if you're interested (MS460,28"). I'd recommend the 461R, since you're in AK it should be stocked at the dealer. No M-Tronic and really is an upgrade compared to 046.

It's easy to find ms460's used

Somewhat, but I'm not paying 700ish for a used saw that sold for about 1000 brand new. It would have to be in real nice shape.
Plus it would need to be that price to my door. A 460 is pretty heavy so it will be easily $45-50 in shipping, USPS Parcel Post.

I still want to know how someone who is always talking about working at a Stihl Dealership had no idea that the 460 is NLA......

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that VF will not answer my question before he deletes this thread.
VF won't answer your question because he's embarrassed that the dealership he works at got run over by a runaway log truck. Lol

Ross,

This is also someone who listed a very obvious Sachs Dolmar as a Husqvarna because the big decals were missing. Don't get me started on the Echo 60S that he couldn't find the model number on for a few hours.

I'm guessing he didn't know any better though. He only knows Stihls because he works at a Stihl dealer.

Was it one of those Inuit kids wrapped in bubble wrap driving the log truck?

They actually let him drive a truck?

I figured his main job was the PR front man for Valley Firewood. I'm sure his boss's are proud of the great job he's doing representing the company
