The 044 is indeed a fine saw, and one I keep my eyes out looking for a nice example.
In many ways preferable to a 362, however, the better filtration and anti vibe of the 362 is a big deal cutting dry gum.
You are in a great position to try them all and make your own informed decision, you'll even make some nice coin on the 038 on eBay.

Feel free to send me a pm if you want to get rid of the 044, perhaps a trade on a husky 281 and you'll have a nice 60 and 80cc saw....

I use my 362 more than any other saw, and I have 2 044s that run great.

For what you are describing, I would get the 362 first, even though it does not have the 461s power.

In actual wt (don't trust the website) it is about 1 3/4 lbs lighter, and that and the AV will make a big difference at the end of the day.

You will prefer the 461 for bucking wood over 20", but the 362 for everything else.

IMO, they are fast, smooth & light.

So your telling us a 362 weighs right at 11 lbs?

To the OP: "don't trust the website" ... instead trust a bunch of biased folks that have an interest in saws and have $10 kitchen scales to weigh chainsaws on!!!!:dizzy: Good solid advice, Mike!

If your not a saw collector and are practical about your purchases owning a 362 and 044 as your only saws is about as pointless as it gets ( sorry mike its true ) .. 461/261 is a good idea..covers quite a few bases..actually id go 346/550 and 461..but thats my opinion

I wouldnt even go 362/461..probably 362/661 would be more like it if i was pickin 2

I have both a 362 & 461. My 2¢ is,,, IF I could only have one of them it would be the 461 without a doubt!! No question.

Even in 16-18" wood I grab my 461 over the 362, sure the 362 is fine for 16-18" wood, but the 461 is more fun :)

461 with a 20" bar will put a lot more wood on the ground, then a 362 with a 20" bar, in the same amount of time, so the 461 will be in your hands less, so I dont notice the extra weight :)

The 362 and 044 are close to the same weight if specs are to be believed.

I personally have always been sorry when I bought the smaller engine in almost anything, at least at some point.

Well said!!

Mike im not sayin this to bust your stones so dont get all pissed off.

If you think a 362 is a good saw for limbing and cutting small wood theres 2 things i can think of.

You love stihl a whole bunch.

Or you havent expierenced much else , and a few swipes on a log at a GTG doesnt count.

Theres better options dude..even from stihl.
