Bought an 066 flat top from a member here several weeks ago. The crank was installed in the case with new seals, but everything else disassembled. Wouldn't have taken long to do a good cleaning, rebuild the carb, change fuel lines and filter, and re-assemble, but I knew I would have to scrounge some parts, so it would be a while before I would get it back together. I have about a dozen dissembled saws in the garage already and have to get some saws ready to sell, so it would have been months before I got to it.

Anyway, I decided to drop it off at the local Stihl dealer - 1 man shop. I've bought parts from him and he has done good by me, so I figured I would let him put it back together, even thought I'm more than capable of doing it myself.

Just felt really guilty as I was driving off because I pride myself on doing all of my own work. I almost turned around to go pick up the saw. I'm particular about how I do things; hope I'm not disappointed in the end result.

Do I need to turn in my Man Card?

It will cost you a small fortune.

And the saga of this saw will occupy this site for months.

It is written..........

All parts were cleaned and sorted and bagged. Some NOS bits and good OEM parts. Owner and I inventoried when I walked in. In other words it wasn't a trash bag full of dirty roached junk that I threw on the counter and left.

And I'm not in a hurry either. He said 2-3 weeks and that's fine by me.

You need to throw the local shop a bone now and then.

A dozen donuts or a bag o' jerky usually works for my favorite area shop.

Faced a similar dilemma..., coincidentally with an 066 flat top project I got into a bit over my head with back in the day. Was intended to be a winter project. Ended up taking me three years and almost $600 peckin' at it here and there to finally get it all together and running right. Didn't know much then and learned a lot building that saw. My favorite saw to this day and I wouldn't let a dealer touch it! LOL
Clean my garage for me? Maybe. So whaddya gonna do with those other 12 boxes o' saws anyway?

It's done. Bill is $128 - that's $73 for labor and $55 for parts. Not sure at this point exactly what he changed, but he said something about wiring when I heard from him last; he also went through the carburetor. He did say it was running great.

I also ordered a new bar and chain - Stihl Rollomatic ES 28" for 3/8 .050 chain. That was pretty reasonable for $120 shipped for bar and chain (also Stihl).

Looks like I'll have right at $500 invested in an 066 that's had the bottom end rebuilt, new crank seals, new OEM piston, new 28" Stihl bar and chain, etc.

I'm in Amsterdam now, but will be home tomorrow. Will pick it up on Thursday.

That was real good.
Sometimes I have a butcher shop process my deer, even though I have a grinder, cuber and slicer. I like doing it myself but hunting season is for hunting and I try to squeeze every day. Sometimes it comes out great but not always.

Yeah it kind of hurt my pride to do it but it was the right call, as long as the Stihl dealer didn't butcher it. He's in his 50's, I think and runs a one man shop so he should know his way around an 066.
