O.K. AS experts... Tell me what saw this is [ RBTREE - say NOTHING...]
Imagine you see these pics on Ebay, and it's listed as a Stihl 311y What are you buying?
MS 460 or late model 046 or a 440/460 hybrid
Thats a 440 with 044 plastic.
No its not.
Uncle...................Uncle.....................UNCLE!
YEAH!! I was screaming that since the first page, suprised nobody else got that. Evidence: 046 filter cover is half an inch wider than an 044, as is the filter base and tank, you cannot interchange any of these pieces without the rest of them going as well. 046 has rounded off corners on the top of the air cleaner cover as well as the top cover, thus the slanted corners on the top cover point directly to 044/440, with the nod to 440 coming from the decomp. (nevermind all of the subtle hints around the rest of the case pointing to 044 instead of 046)Looks like a mid-late 90's 044 with an 046 tank, filter base, intake flange, and air filter cover. Nice job Lakeside!
Looks like a 440 with an 088 side cover and dawgs. Look at the chain catcher and chip deflector, I've only seen that on an 088, although the 066 has the holes for it.
Man, you say you're from california, but you've obviously never been around real west coast loggers. Full wrap 044s, 046s, & 066s come with their own extended clutch covers, dual dogs, and chain catchers like you've observed on the 088. The 088 has a much larger clutch cover than the 3 smaller ones do (which are interchangable) and different shaped dogs than the smaller saws come with, but more or less similar.

begleytree said:My guess is it started life as an 064. it now wears a 660 top end and filter.
There's no decomp button sticking up through that hole......
I'm guessing he used a newer shroud since the saw was run over. I know RBtree had a couple 044s........
There's nothing related to an 064/660 on the saw in the pictures.
Well done Jacob J. and Teksim... You solved the puzzle without random guesses. I rep you all if I have bullets.
