Hey everyone. I'm really liking the Stihl 2-in-1 file tool, but I find that its chewing my rakers down WAY too much. My 261 kicks like a mule now. I had to remove the raker file, and found that it still wasn't doing what I wanted. I ended up using a file by hand for the first time in 2 months. I realized how much better that is over all.

I think I might use the 2-in-1 for touch ups instead. I've been chewing up chains from the recent storm calls in our area and I feel like the 2-in-1 over-does the rakers when you press down too hard trying to get those teeth down past the chips.

Any suggestions?

Hmmm...

My Stihl 2-in-1 doesn't appear to take enough off my rakers. I always file them down with another file after I sharpen the cutters. I check the raker height every other sharpening session or so.

I have a 3/8" and a .325 2 in 1 file and I find they both work well for me.

I also hand file and have a bench mounted electric sharpener but i tend to use the 2 in 1 file more often then not lately.

I use the stihl 2-in-1 file on my .325 chain equipped Chinese saw.
With the factory china chain it takes the rakers down to .040, with oregon lpx chain it takes the rakers down to .020 and then I take the rakers down with a hand file to .040 as that's whats she likes best.

I have them for all of my saws and I have found that it does a great job, no complaints here!

Maybe you have one with the wrong file inserted for the rakers?
I have a 3/8" model with the Pferd label in blue and it works great (if I work it great).
The files are replaceable individally. Could be they got a "bad" batch and yours was shipped with one of those??

I don't know. Maybe It's because I've had a lot of teeth getting chewed up from storm calls. I tend to file pretty hard. I think I'm bending the unit and applying overt pressure from from the flat file.

The issue is when the tooth gets filed back about 50% you need more depth gauge clearance. This do to the tooth rocking downward away from the wood. Think of a teeter totter. In front of the center pivot point, the end goes up, move to the other side it goes down. The gauges that ride on multiple teeth will never work well on a tooth filed past about 50% of the tooths length. A progressive depth gauge too is the only appropriate tool to use.

I tend to be the same way so I use the 2 in 1 with 1 hand now and it seems to get all my stihl chains razor sharp.

I dont even use my electric bench mount sharpener now as I find the 2 in 1 works just as well.

Thought I'd update this as I posted earlier in this thread that the 2in1 was taking the rakers down to 20tho but for some reason it takes the Oregon speed cut chain down to 40 or so tho making it so grabby its hard to run the saw.
I ended up pulling the raker file out of it so I can use it like the op did and filing my almost new chain back quite a bit to get the rakers back to normal.
Its weird it works well on the Oregon full chisel lpx I have on one saw but not on semi chisel speed cut chain that's on the other.

Yah ... if you take a couple swipes after every tank or two of fuel you can have a fast-cutting chain ... I have noticed that once the cutting teeth are about 1/2 the 2in1 does take more off the rakers but we have ways of making that work ! All in all a GREAT tool out in the field for a quick touch-up !!!
