Talked to a guy earlier, he dropped off a generator for repair. He said his Brother is retired, and for extra $$ he drives around picking up "unwanted" equipment and stuff, also nice things that have been pushed ot the curb.

He said he takes it apart and sells the metals for scrap, takes the rest to the landfill.

He said he takes about 3 Trailor and truck loads of METAL to the yard every 2-3 weeks, and the same to the landfill.

He said he gets a mess of nice Stihls and Husky saws, and always has a few old antiquated machines. He says that he doesnt even try to start any of it. He doesnt care if it run, he has no repair skills, just metal recovery skills. He had 2 riding mowers that he knew ran fine, one needed front tires, one needed a drive belt, both had the engines plucked for aluminum, and the decks and frames sold for steel scrap...

So he is giving him my phone number, he said If I pay him scrap cost, or close to it, he will hold out anything I want.

He said with the commercial saws, he pulls the bars and chains, takes the motors out for aluminum, then if it has a plastic case, it goes to the junkyard, He said the MAJORITY of his stuff has the magnesium case, that goes to the scrap yard.

He told me, I can figure on paying him 5-10 dollars a saw, 5 for a push mower, 15-20 for a riding mower. He said he moved 25-30 push mowers a week, most in new or like new condition.

He gets a gokart, a complete Gokart, rips the motor off, sells it for the aluminum, then sells the steel frame for scrap.

So im going to ask him to hold out Gokarts, Chainsaws, and push mowers, thats what really moves sown here, and they can usually be made running for little money.

Im gonna be "in the saws"

You checked with "mama" first, didn't you?

alway's fun to get new (or old) stuff, surprising what some people throw away. hope you find some goodies.

Im good to go...nearly unlimited storage.

Plus Im looking at moving my operation into a 4000 sq/ft building, so that will open up alot more storage.

just talked to the guy again, told him some bad news about his gnerator..

He tells me that basically what his brother does, where he gets the good stuff, is Local storage places, when people default on payments to get their stuff out of storage...all the places call his brother to clear em out.

He also gets things from Pawn shops. If a pawn shop buys a saw, and it sits on the shelf for 6 months, the fuel goes stale, the pawn shop will cut its losses and chuck the saw, rather than spend the $$ to fix it.

I knew of a couple guys that also did this. Not to many reasons someone will take a comp. saw gocart or mower and scrap it out in less it is to hot to sell. Scrap is impossible to trace.

Red, It's too bad that you don't live closer to me. Once a month I take a load of riders, push mowers, trimmers, generators, saws, and stuff to the scrap yard in my dump truck. We offer free disposal of equipment deemed NWR. The scrap money pays for our Christmas party.

I have got to get out of the truck and tell the vultures at the yard to stand clear of the back of the truck while I dump it. They stand at the back of the truck waiting to dive on the treasures as they fall. I have seen people get into arguments on who saw something first. I just laugh and watch in the mirror as I drive up to the scale to collect my cheque.

"Hey", "i live closer to you". Any Stihl saws in that stuff??

Doc

If there are any Stihls they are pretty old. The newer Stihls and Huskys go on the parts saw shelves. I can hook you up with a few dozen wild things or featherweight trimmers!

How much of this stuff finds it's way back to the shop?

You'd be shocked!

Ive run across complete Riding mowers, that RAN, that needed a tire, or had a bent blade...whatever.

I once delivered some handheld stuff to a man, his neighbor had a Craftsman GT out by the road, hitched to a nice craftsman Dump trailor. The tractor had a 18hp Briggs Twin sideshaft engine, electric PTO on the front, 8 speed Iron gearbox, Lug tires, 48" deck...it was nice, needed the tie rod replaced or welded, it hooked something and broke. But it started and ran, moved.

I told him Id be back in 45 minutes with my trailor and a winch...

I came back, and it was gone. I figured he had done something with it....I knocked on his door, and he said he thought that was me getting it...someone had come by some 20 minutes prior and winched it on a flatbed. I was pizzed off.

He said he had a new Tractor already, and it was just too tight in his shed for 2, and when this one had the tie rod bust, it was reason to get rid of it.

I picked up 8 complete push mowers from a guy, 4 of em ran, 3 I made run, 1 had a bad enough knock I chucked it. I paid 5 dollars apeice, ended up selling 4 of em at 55 a peice. The others I used for parts, making approx. 75 apeice on parts.

Carbs, Mufflers, Coils, Recoils, dip sticks, controls, It all adds up.

People throw away good stuff as an excuse to buy NEW stuff...Freind picked up a NEW Honda push mower off the side of the road, wouldnt start, new plug, and it fired right up. Guy pulled on it a few times, didnt start, gave up, bought another one.

Some people have more money than brains...These people keep me stocked up on good stuff.

Must be bad when the FEATHER-WEIGHT TRIMMERS aren't worth the shipping cost:hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

I cant knock the featherlights...My dad used one for 8 years to trim 2 acres, both were fenced. It never failed him once, then last spring it lost compression suddenly. I bought him a John Deere produced HOMELITE straight shaft trimmer...more power, little more weight, starts easier though.

Ive got one of them "weedeater" Excalibur 22" hedge trimmers. 5 years old, 3 pull starter...it gets beat on 3 times a year for 1 day. That thing really is handy. under 90 dollars new. When the fuel line breaks, Ill buy another one.

Laugh all you want Andy, but I tell you what, bang for buck, those suckers can't be beat!!!! And what other string timmer can you run in one hand, and hold a beer in the other?

NO NO NO.... I am going to buy a couple of cases of BEER so I can dumb down enough to try it.. Then, after extensive market research I'll take back the featherweighs to HD:popcorn:
