I really dont like those muffler styles on the 3400 3.7 etc. All should have been like a 4000 stock.

So if I added a little pipe where this flat style exit is the saw god's will shine upon me?
I do not like them either. I weld up all the rear exit holes on them so the exhaust can only exit through the pipe I welded in place. I do keep the spark arrestors in place. The 4000 ones are definitely better.
I should go n grab a better picture and most here know the saw well...

I know the red craftsman topend and crankshaft I got from a guy off eBay was and is a 3700 thin ring that came off a 3.7. I even snatched up to new rings two years ago while they were still available.

Haven't fooled with saws last 2-3 years because of an incident with a new puppy getting her foot burned stepping on a hot coal from my wood strove (it got stuck between the pads in her foot!). then my daughter getting a kitten - in addition to the past few winters never really getting cold here.
Things may change this year - pets have grown up some and it is supposed to be a cold winter. Still not sure I can keep the cat out of the way, though.
Good to get back on the site and hear from old friends. Looks like a lot of the same people are still here.

That would be a nasty burn. Dogs are resilient. A friend's dog had a bad fall and lost it's right rear leg. You'd never know it the way it runs around.
I would have to agree with you Tim. All of the grey craftsman 3.7 saws I have seen were always 3800 with thick rings.
Also I have seen very few Red 3.7 craftsman saws that were not 3700 thin rings. I know it was not a hard fast rule that they were all thin rings but I have not run across very many that were not.

Hey Pete how are you doing yeah I still got the 5.2 and I still use it occasionally it runs good glad you still are getting a little bit of fun out of that Bowsaw too

The 3700 wasn't along production run. Poulan's list indicates it only ran for 3 or 4 years. Maybe the later Craftsman red saws that were 3800's were built after the end of that run. I have two red ones (3700's) which were assembled in the US. The only two of that line that I have that were not assembled at the Skil plant in Toronto. The Skil saws are usually conspicuous by their crappy paint jobs.
In my experience the red ones are usually 3700s and the grey ones are 3800s too.
Hi Tim. All is well here and I am all set for winter. I did alot of cutting this year up in the mountains for firewood. Some of it for the inlaws. In all I felled 32 trees this year. I was able to get out some of the big Poulans also for some good size spruce trees. How about your neck of the woods how is everything.
All is well here. Things are beginning to get back towards normal (whatever that means these days).
The family is all well and escaped the pandemic.
I've been to two local Canadian GTG's this year. They were great. Lots of fun and only a couple of hours away.
October has been warm here and Fall is finally arriving. Still nice with temps during the day in the mid 40's or so.
Other than the GTG's I haven't run a saw.
I was curious Tim did you ever get that Homelite put together that the handle was repaired on. If I remember correctly it was one of the more scarce models. And then again you have got it done and I just do not remember.
Out bucking up some wood today getting it ready for splitting. About 48* out and no wind. Running a 3400 with a red craftsman 3.7 cylinder and piston in it. A thin ring. It cuts up that lodge pole pine like a hot knife through butter.

I had that together about a week after I received it. Best looking part on the saw.

It's 64F here today (ight after I said mid 40's). Hard to believe for this time of year. I cut the grass again which is unheard of.
Starting to cool off as the week goes on.
The Fall has been very warm.
3700's are stout saws.
What's all this aboot eh?
