Yep, warranty is one of the FIRST things I consider and one of the first things I ask if someone wants me to work on so called new eq. How old is your eq and are YOU the original owner. Sometime though new is a piece of vintage 30 year eq and it just NEW to them.

I quite often for my own new eq I label a piece of eq as to when the warranty expires (or label the owners manual with such and attach the purchase receipt as indicated in the owners manual the the requirements such as receipts, registering, etc.

Several companies (appears most) hope you lose your receipts or not register the eq so they can easily VOID a warranty and not have to put up with your whining/moaning and crying.

When you buy stihl equipment it's the dealers responsibility to register it. Found that out when I bought my ms400 this past spring.

I edited and said that after seeing the smoke stopped when OP emptied the bar oil tank and ran the saw with no smoke. pretty much making all else I said not to matter.
Seems when no bar oil present, no smoke, may eliminate two stroke oil smoke being the problem.

This internet sawing is more difficult than I thought.
I need to get healed up and off of here so much.

How many ozs of oil are you mixing to how many gallons of gasoline?

Reading the "ENTIRE" post does make a difference. Post 13 - 22 - 32 - 33 Got my attention.

@Raatler post #47 may be the answer many with 170/180 - 025 - 029 saws that have oiling issues. I will be cleaning out my oil galley hoping for bar oiling improvement. (THANKS)

It is an impossibility for bar oil to get into the engine from the oil tank on the ms170/180.

I thought of it but I was enjoying reading all the responses, especially since I have an ms180. Eventually I would have brought the warranty thing up but we gained a lot of good information and inspired me to the dealer this morning picked up carb kit, plug, air filter. Installed just a moment ago. Runs great!

I haven't bought a "NEW" saw for 25 years and never gave it a thought.
I was reading through this thread and was wondering about some comments made that some posts obviously never registered with some.
Part of the learnin' and entertainment here on AS.
Reading the entire thread gave me a different perspective on 170 oiling problems, and without the bantering I might still be scratching my noggin. To ME This is a good thread.

Muffler bearing slinging oil/grease.

Print this thread for the warranty Stihl tech when you take the saw in. (he may want to ask us for tips.

Post the results of his and your findings?????????

Yeah, if it was a loose welch plug, it should be warrantable if still in the time frame. But it wouldn't be if the owner worked on the saw prior, so talking to the dealer first might be the best way.

After further consultation with my wife I'm thinking she got me this saw christmas before last. Cordless weedeater was last christmas. At any rate the receipt is in an unknown location. And-I have zero confidence in the shop that it came from. Prior service episodes have been very bad. And--I can just imagine their reaction when I tell them the saw smokes too much ("they're supposed to smoke, dumbass"). Anyway I think someone requested a look at the air filter and spark plug. Filter looks clean, spark plug is really bad. Burning waay rich in my limited experience ??

Only the left metric muffler bearings have been going bad... the right ones seem to hold up better.

Take the carb off now. It is running way too rich for a reason.
Pop the covers off of the carb and put up some pics.
