I have 4 Stihl non M-Tronic saws... 170, 261, 461 and 661. The smaller three have 4 positions and Stop stays off. The 661 has a 4 position but Stop returns to Run. After running the 661 I keep forgetting to put the other saws on Run when warm and end up pulling multiple times until I remember to turn them on. It's annoying! That said, I like the return to run and wish they all had it!
For years I was so use to having to manually hit run. That now, whenever I grab a 661 and hit it. For a moment I think the dang switch is jammed!🤣
That also being said. I too like the automatic return run.

My dad claims to have run into one in the 80s. Lots of lore locally about them.

My dad only had a heritage 22 with him when ran into his Sasquatch.
My dad claimed that back in the 60's him and his friend had possibly cut his track when he and his friend were hunting out if a spike camp up around the Mt.Hood area in Oregon. Probably the only time in my life I thought he was full of BS or that possiblity he and his friend were drunk or tripping on acid at the camp fire and seeing things! 🤣🤣 However, the old man never used drugs 🤷 so I guess that narrows it down to drunk!

I have the TW3HD,

Is that what he has??

Similar, 6 way blade and a log lift

Had to put down our older dog tonight, and since the ground is frozen 8’ deep decided the best way to deal with the body was to build a big fire and burn it.

So while keeping an eye on that I split some wood to bring up to the house.

We have all seen KK’s wheel barrow, but figured I’d share a pic of the wood sled we use to transport wood from the pile to the porch. With a little effort I can pull it righ up on the deck and park it next to the front door.

When it’s 40-50 below that last about a day, but in these nice above 0 temps I can get about 2-3 days out of a sled full.

Sorry to hear that bud. Definitely one of the hardest things I've ever had to do! It really was.

Never heard that before, is that some sort of a soft reset?

The resets on M-tronics are either idling in the cold start position for 90 seconds, or no-load WFO for 30 seconds. For obvious reasons, I choose the idle option... although it's almost never needed. Really the only time I do the 90 seconds reset is after modding a saw or if conditions have significantly changed since the last time I ran that saw.

I use the cold start position on my M-tronics a lot. They'll almost always start in that position, unless they are quite hot. Just today at work, I ran my 462r out of fuel...and had to use the cold start to get it running after fueling. Not because it's cold, but because the M-tronic seems to richen up to a saw that is running out of fuel. Once you refuel, they can be a bear to start on the "run" position. The best method is just to not let it run out though.

Love that sled!

How many cord an hour? If you had to guess?
MustangMike, how many cords did we get done that time you me and my pop were on the saws, Billy was in the excavator and the boys were running the splitter?

I think we did a TON in 4 hours. Like 12-14

I’ll call and ask him what fits under lean to, we filled it….

Got the load from last night split and mostly stacked. All hackberry and cherry. My little shaver picked out 3 20" rounds and wouldn't let me split them. He wants to set them about 2' apart for a jungle gym.
I'm not sure that's a mom approved idea!
Proud of the little guy tho. For a 6 yr old he busted it pretty hard tonight. Up and down out of the truck rolling pieces to the tailgate to keep me busy at the splitter. When he'd get ahead on that , he'd jump down and take the splits to my teenager doing the stacking! Could help but think how he would put half the people that work for me to shame!

But we literally had the perfect storm

Three experienced saw guys running saws non-stop
Experienced guy in a excavator with a thumb
And four guys in there early 20’s splitting non-stop

Two of those guys, my nephews, are Sasquatch sized and STRONG
Reminds me of my nephew. They had 4 or 5 cars backed up on their road over a downed tree. Brandon cut a section out and two perty boys tried to move it out of the way. Both together couldn't budge it. Brandon says in his king Kong voice " I'll get it " and by himself without even trying real hard picked one end up and threw it off the road like it was a landscape board. I try real hard to stay on his good side!

You forgot to mention a Mustang filled with Uncle Mike's saws that everyone used!

Most saws seemed to get used till the chain was dull then they picked up the next one. As I recall you favored my MOFO ported 360 and my 044, Derek liked my MS460 D-jug saw, and Bill could not believe how my ported Asian 660 (with square file chain) went through his large, seasoned Black Locust log. Don't remember specifically which ones Chris and your Dad liked, but everyone was using some of them (in addition to their own saws).

Matt, I was too busy cutting that day to pay attention to how much got split. Ask Bill.

That’s funny! My grandma was like 5foot even. She used to call Christopher 6’4’’ King Kong

He is a good boy

MustangMike showed up with literally 14 saws stuffed in his mustang. We just went to town and knocked out two log loads

Bro-in-law says it was only 10 cord

I guess it’s like a fish story, grows every time I remember it

Kind of amazing how much a group of fellas who knows how to work can get done in a days time.
That looked like loads of fun!!!

That's Brandon. Could rip a man in half I'm certain of it but wouldn't hurt a flea. A gentle giant if you will. He is not all that tall but freaky strong. His brother is 4 " taller than him but is scared to death of him. He told me he pestered Brandon into wrestling one last time when Brandon was just 16". He had him about half mad and I guess he commenced to throw him around the yard like a rag doll. Says he's never going there again! Lol

On M-Tronic saws the down lever position is known as Start, not Choke (although it is similar). Also, there is no fast idle, so if you flood it, you may need someone to hold the trigger to get it to start.

Hold the trigger to get the lever to go down, then release the trigger (before letting up on the lever) to get the lever to stay down.

For re-starting a warm saw, leave it in the Run position (do not use Start, it will flood).

I don't like to use the compression relief for cold starts, but almost always use it for warm re-starts.

Using the compression relief on cold starts reduces how effective your impulse line works. You don't really need it on restarts as the saw is already pressurized.

Being pressurized is what allows the saw to run at any angle.
Idk what the choke setting does, but I do know the saw fires up and runs on that setting.

Its a real pain when you mix old/new stihl and husqy. Half of the old husqy I've converted to the momentary switch, then grab the redmax and forget to flick the switch to run... they should all return to start...
