I gotta say, this topic has been bugging me for a while. All the dealers around my area, here in Upstate New York, don't ever seem to move on saw prices at all. They just sell them at the normal MSRP and call it a day. I have never had any dealer throw in extra stuff or nothing. Its like there is no ####ering with them at all. I went to this one place a month ago and they had a brand new Husqvarna 365 on the floor. I asked how much they were asking for it thinking maybe he will knock some money off since they aren't made no more. Sure enough he pulls out his Husky book, and qoute's me the normal MSRP for the saw. Now mind u this place has a good inventory of Husky parts, thats why i make the 45 min drive, but u would think since the saw was 2 years old they would have dropped the price a little bit? Ive been to just about all the chainsaw places in my area and only one Stihl dealer is good to me. I searched around for a week trying to find a dealer who would sell me just a MS440 power head and only one dealer would. The Country True Value stores around here sell Stihl and they are way over priced. They wouldn't even sell me just a power head. Then one Ace hardware store sells Husky and Stihl and they are the same too. A new Stihl/Husky place just opened up down the road form me and he won't move on the prices or even sell just the power head for any saws.I know this cuz my buddy went in there trying to buy a MS660 power head and the guy said he couldn't sell him just the power head. Why is that? These are the reasons why i have always been tempted to buy online, even though i haven't.Now, I mainly buy blow up saw's off of ebay, fix them and then use them. I live in the Albany area, any other New Yorkers have the same problems?

Go see him

AS member spike60 recently sold me a 372xp at a reasonable price. I don't know if just sells powerheads or not, but definitely give him a call at (845)657-6395 Ashokan Turf and Timber. A nice guy to deal with so far.

Chainsaw Dealer

I've been buying parts for Stihl and other non-chainsaw stuff (e.g., Briggs and Stratton, Tecumseh, etc.) from "All-Seasons" in Scotia NY, about 20 miles west of Albany. He's a good guy (i.e., Duane the owner) , and the parts man (Tony) has ordered anything he doesn't have in stock, but they get their price. I've never bought a new saw from him, but did pay list for a Stihl string trimmer a couple of years ago. I like getting a deal as well as the other guy, but I'm satisfied to buy from a dealer that's honest and tries to meet my requirements.

We usually stick pretty close to MSRP on our Stihl, but we usually throw in some extras. We usually give an extra chain, and a 6 pack of oil, but sometimes we'll through in a case. If they want safety gear with their saw I'll take 25% off the gear. It all depends on the specific person and what will make them satisfied with their purchase.

In Averil Park is what used to be called Schultz maintenence and repair. Its got a 3 letter name now.SMR maybe? The owners name is Joe Schultz. Good fair guy. At least 20 years in the business selling, a good inventory of parts, and close to you. Its right at the intersection of rtes 43 and 66. I have his phone # if you can't find it. I'll pm it to you if you're interested.

I had a chance to stop at Cuttinscotts store, nice place! Good selection, even some logging supplies like chains and hooks. Alot of eye candy when it comes to Dolmar saws.
I'm going to go back and try out some of those Dolmars on his trees, you shoud see his lot. Good buzzing to be had there!
Neat area too! You shoud see all the flat rocks around the area. A landscapers dream. I think the rock is called Vermont Blue Stone?

You're talking about buying one saw? I would ask for a break in price after I became a steady customer somewhere. But to walk in off the street and expect a discount, why? What do they give out at your job?

I understand that, but alot of people go into a dealerships for the first time and get a deal. Why do u have to be a steady customer???? Thats like saying u gotta earn ur keep before u even buy anything?????. Would, you as a business owner give deals in order to get business. Or sell at book price and barely have any sales? Im glad i found the dealer i did when i was looking for my MS440. He sold me the power head for $600. Honestly at my job, we give 110% at all the jobs we do. We go above and beyond most of the time.

It also makes a difference one which saw you're looking to purchase. I'm able to wheel and deal a little bit more on the higher end saws than on the lower end models. But I think it comes down to the customers thinking that there is a huge mark up when there is actually very little profit made on equipment.

Thats true, i do realize that. One of my very good friends own a dirt bike dealership. He makes very little on bike sales or anything. I think my real question should be is how come some dealers will sell just the power head, but some don't? I know the dealers have to make money too. I guess im just young and full of questions hahahaha. Just curious what everyone had to say. Thanks guys

I'm in nys about an hour south of albany and I use conways lawn and power equipment. They have been good to me. I have bought 3 saws from them this year, and 2 last year. Good, honest guys and good service. Parts they don't have on hand they can order or find but most parts they have in stock. They do cut good customers breaks on prices.
