017 won't shut off

I was given an 017 from a friend of mine, I went and did a muffler mod to it and put a non epa carb, the little thing fires up and runs great but it won't shut off by the switch properly. I noticed the wire clip on the inside was a little loose so I squished it in place, I get no resistance from the bolt in the head right through to the top tab on the coil. I thought that when the tab on the coil is grounded the engine loses spark. I even tried grounding the tab to the head with a screwdriver when it was running with no effect.
Usually it's a saw won't run problem but this saw runs great, just doesn't want to quit unless choked.

With my tester I had no resistance from that tab to the cylinder head when connected before I removed it for your picture request.

Unplug it and check the resistance through the wires to the block.

When the saw is running a screwdriver touching this clip and the head doesn't shut the saw off. I'm thinking there is something wrong inside the coil not killing the spark.

Well, if grounding out the post doesn't kill the saw, then it is in the coil.

Back last spring, I was perusing the pawn shops and came across an 020 (or something small) for cheap enough to be tempting. Fired it up, and it displayed the same symptoms, EXCEPT that choking it didn't kill it either. Go figure.

Didn't buy that saw.

Something looks odd where the black wire is inserted in the switch lever - hard to tell from the picture. Is the wire actually connected to the copper tube that the spring contacts to complete the "kill" connection?

remove the kill wire from the coil tab, using a different wire grounded at the coil bolt touch the coil kill tab with it. if it doesn't shut off check the coil for a sliver of steel hidden in the muck coating it or the coil kill tab has a internally broken wire.

I'm thinking I have a broken wire in the coil. I didn't think it was possible. But apparently it is.

remove the coil and look for a wire or ground strap between the coil and laminations. Post a photo of the front and back side of the coil.

I have a 009L that does the same thing. Never bothered to look into it much but hopefully you find a fix for both of us!

Opened it up again tonight and I wish I didn't take the coil off. Looks like something hit it, going to replace it.
I can barely get a gap trying to put it back on.

The flywheel hit it when the coil got loose. Check the fw closely for damage. The impact damage broke the connection between the coil and laminations. The secondary coil winding is also now open. You can check with a meter. The only reason it runs is that the spark now jumps TWO gaps... one in the plug and one in the coil!

I can barely get a gap trying to put it back on.

Don't be a hack! Replace the coil before it fails completely. Good, used OEM are cheap on Ebay. 017/018/ms170/ms180 should interchange. AM may be junk.

Spray WD-40 or ARC Electronic Parts Cleaner in the on-off switch then blow it clean with compressed air. Try it now and post results on here.
