046 - Tank Guard, is it necessary?

My 046 is missing the metal guard that protects the fuel tank, is this something that I need to get replaced? There is already an extended rubber chip guard (black tab in photo) for the cover, so curious if this is enough protection for the tank.

I see more 046/460/ with damage to tank than I do with no damage no matter what the set up is on the clutch cover. $15 seems like good insurance to avoid a fuel leak.

I just checked my MS-461R. It already has one on it. I wasn't even aware of that.
