ohhhh wait, also, the sling is set up to tighten the pin, pin should be inside the eye, not the working side! been there, done that, keep a crescent wrench handy to break those free when I forget

The way the shackle is with the running part on the pin can create roll out. Always put the u of the shackle on the running part of the sling and the dead end of the sling on the pin. Can’t roll out that way if you have slack in the sling and tighten it it can roll the pin out the way your setup. Or if you tighten drop down see a different angle have the operator slack up to move the tip for a better angle retighten then you cant see the pin will never know it rolled out.

Yeah that’s the correct way. Bad twist but it is what it is I’m anal about the way I do crane work.

I’m not perfect in anyway I never had a teacher I was never given anything I earned it all the hard way started from the bottom and went up from there. I learn every job and will continue to learn until I die. So many ppl die because they think they can just go cut a tree down and use a crane to pick chunks out. I done two black walnuts identical 15ft apart one pick on left tree 4500# same pick on right tree same length down to the inch 6900# blew my mind.

our hackberry trees are this way, did a bucket job a few weeks ago where I had to cut and toss over a barn and fence, one limb could be 10 pounds and the next identical one will be 50-70 pounds!

haven't weighed black walnut, but I know its HEAVY, my mini skid barely moves 4ft long 24" diameter walnut logs

Very heavy here are the logs in question. I had 4 4in slabs made mirror image for my tables

The oaks were 8ft long 8000# ish a pick was a ****ing monster another thing I learned the green log charts are just that a chart allot of times there close sometimes you get that one log that’s just like wtf

We use cranes very frequently. On crane days we pack in as many crane jobs as we can to get the most use out of the crane. They charge hourly, and will go to as many sites as we wish, as many set ups as needed.
So, short answer is yes. It is common practice to use a crane on multiple jobs in one day.

Company we use charges a 4 or 5 hour minimum, so we use them all day if we can. Even if it's a tree we could climb & rig, the crane just saves hours and hours of labour on the big stuff.


Side note, be careful if you're doing the ground work with crane picks. Not only can the log roll unpredictably, but just last week I was nearly struck by a pick when it snapped in half where it was strapped on.

We had the butt of the piece on the ground, and I was guiding it to lay the way we wanted it. Snap! The log thumped to the ground. I looked up and saw the other piece still on the strap up in the air, swing in my direction.. it grazed me on the arm lightly, just barely missed me. Dang that was a fright.
