I got a local on FB who has a 268, looks like a non-xp. It’s missing the clutch cover and the top end cover is faded out for 150$ running supposedly. I’m looking for something in the 372, stihl 440 category, how would this compare? I’d like to have the ability to pull a 24-28” bar in a pinch and possibly do some milling…any watch outs on these? Good deal if it runs?

I think all 268’s are xp models?
its 66cc. less power than 372 or 440
24” really max for it. The not best for milling, but could get away with it if your patient

now that you mention that, I kinda remember that now, sold so few of them as most bought 266’s instead

268 non xp is open port.

268xp closed port.

Still worth the price.

I think it was the early 268's that was the closed port XP and the later run was the plain 268 open ports.

No to milling IMO.

Correct....the 268XP only ran a couple years and became the 272XP. The nonXP with a Gilardoni open port P&C carried on as the 268. A few Specials were produced along the way too and I believe they were closed port. The Gilardoni is a very nicely made cyl and actually has one more cooling fin the the Mahle XP cyl....just not as powerful...
