I read somewhere that they still make the 288 and sell in Brazil. Does anyone know if this is true and if so how to go about buying one?

I believe it's still true. There was a guy in the trading post selling a NIB 288. You'll have to do some searching.

I've read some posts about certain Stihl models where people said it was "theoretically" possible to slip/ship the saws into the US as parts if the saws are disassembled enough to look like parts (should the package get pulled for inspection).
