So I see alot of love around here for the 390xp. What about the 395xp? I know the 395 is heavier, but it also has a bit more HP to go along with that weight. Is there any other reason that most peeps seem to prefer the 390?

I like the 395 for a 36" or longer bar or a 32" if it's going to stay stock in hardwood. The 390 is a little smaller and more nimble. Both have their place depending on what you're going to do with them.

Whelp, if I got one, it would always have a 32" or 36" bar on it. From what I can tell, they are pretty much the same design sans the side chain tensioner.

If it's going to be a falling saw the 390 is about a 1.5 lbs lighter than the 395. If it's mainly bucking wood all the time then the 395 does have a little torque edge.

395 has a more robust oiler, is a total badass, but don't get one unless you really need one. 385/390/288 are gonna be almost as strong and feel much better doing it

Well I already have a 372xpw. I want to take the 32" bar off my 372 and put a 24 on it. The 390 or 395 would be my "big saw" then, and have a 32" at least on it all the time. I actually would even get a used 394xp if I could find a nice one for a really good price, as I wouldn't be using it a ton.

Sounds like your saw should be the 395xp then?

I have a 372xp, 385xp, 390xp and a 394xp (same specs as 395). I would recommend the 385/390 over the 395 for 32" bar. Its noticeably lighter and more nimble than the 395 and it makes very nice power with excellent AV.

If you want to run a 42" bar....I would recommend the 395xp. But for a 24-36" bar my recommendation is a 385/390xp.

Yeah I won't put anything bigger than a 36" on either. So the 390 is THAT much more nimble feeling then?

I notice quite a big difference between the 390 and 394. Obviously with a huge bar they are both heavy, but especially when running a 24-28 the 390 still feel manageable but the 394 just feels more like a brick.

Just my opinion. Also I prefer the power delivery of the 390 better than the 394. Its a higher rpm saw with better throttle response but still plenty of grunt.

Although when running 36"+ the torque of the 394 is much appreciated.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm not in a huge hurry to buy one of these. I'm just putting one on my wish list for purchase in the next year. I always thought I wanted a 394 until I saw the new 390, and it got me thinkin' which is never a good thing lol! Also, if i was going to get a pig saw to keep a 42" bar on it, I would/will just find a nice used 3120 and have the rev limiter mod'ed. I would only do that if I started milling, which could happen someday, but not someday soon.

Here! Here!
I run my 385 often just for chits and giggles. I dont reach for the 395 unless i know i need the 395. To me they just don't seem related. The 395 is a rotten bastige cousin...not a kind bigger brother to a great family of saws.

Also inboard vs outboard clutch .....

I have a jonsered 2095 which is similar to the 394/395, although mine is ported and it cuts mighty quick to noodle forks and twisted wood with a 24" bar. Need longer, but that's what it's wearing to deal with hard dry Aussie hardwoods at present.

Ok so I guess I will get the 390xp instead of a 461, and a 660 instead of a 395xp, and all will be right in the world.
