55 rancher problems

I got a 55 rancher that will run great for a while then spits and sputters and dies out. Never had any problems with it till now. I did notice that if i unscrew the gas cap and put it back on it will start and run for a while. Do these saws have a vented cap or is there a vent line that could be plugged up? Thanks in advance.

501 87 31-01 might be broken, or full of dirt etc.

If there is any question, remove the muffler and check piston for scoring. Intake leaks are very common on those also.
