Does anybody know what the nuts of an American beech look like in the wild? I think I came across one in a park, but it looked a little too high-branched to be a beech. The nuts were very spiny and about the size of a golfball (some stuck into my sneaker after I walked on them). Anybody?

Beech nuts are smaller; golfball size may be chestnut.

Beeches may be high-branched in the wild; any tree may lose low libs to shade.
