picked up a minty MS261 the other day, been wanting a newer 50cc saw for some time. ran it stock and was impressed, nice little saw, decent power, well balanced.

seeing as I can't leave well enough alone, today I added gills, advanced the timing around 10 deg by removing 1/2 the fly wheel key and removed the base gasket, putting the squish around 0.021" (started out at 0.036"). lastly I touched up the chain with a file.

it's currently wearing a 7 pin .325 rim and a 16" bar with semi chisel stihl chain. might try 3/8 and see how it goes. any thoughts on running 8 or 9 pin .325 rims?

tomorrow we shall see how she runs! Can't wait!

That saw should run well. The OE 261 loves a muff mod and timing advance. Matter of fact that is all I done to mine and my brother ports saws. I may eventually port it but it runs strong as is. I usually run 16" 3/8 or 18" .325 on mine.

Nice saw. Curious to see how it runs.

I think 8 would be ok, 9 only if you use it for small stuff.

Good job with the muffler louvers. I am starting to like them more and more.

I am hoping to run it today. This was my first go at gills. Other than lacking a screen they look sweet to me. nice and clean

They look great I am a metal fabricator by trade and we build gills with a huge machine. How did you build those I m so intrigued.

i used a demel with an abrasive wheel to cut 4 slots into the stock muffler. I then used a small pair of smooth jaw pliers to bend up the remaining material. I deburred and then ran the muffler through an ultrasonic cleaner w/ some simple green.

if the big machine you are referring to is some type of press break or turret punch, my work doesn't compete with what you would get from one of those. these gills don't have any cup shape to them like a truely formed feature would. hope that makes sense.

oh, I did run the saw today. now I REALLY like the saw! had to readjust both the H and L jets. I need to put a tach on it to see what I am turning.

You are correct the machine I speak of is huge and does a great job BUT not a chance you could do what you did with it so you win the award there. Hence why I asked how you did yours I really like it. I built a deflector for my 441 I will see if I have a pic and post it. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1420416227.113527.jpgP

This is a 241, but I do the 261 the same way.

You can run factory double spikes/roller catcher too if you want. Just order the 362 set and drill two holes that are already marked out in the clutch cover. MS261 is a smooth quality 50cc pro saw that very few have anything nasty to say about it. After lots of run time in 3/8 & .325 l conclude that .325 is the best chain for a ms261....really smooth. A 441cm is all you need now!lol

been going back and forth on the chain. all my other saws run 3/8, but I am going to run .325 for a while, see how I like it.

would love a Stihl 44X or a 46X. might get rid of my 362 to fund the swap.

looks good Brad! Any issues / complaints about not having a screen?

I'll make a new post on this if needed, but thought one you guys could help me. I'm working on an ms261 and need to richen the high side. I'm up against the stop. How do I remove this limiter? The high side is the one in the pics that is the aluminum housing.
