another wood ID! sorry!

I was out with the kids sledding on our hill and realized I have no idea what kind of tree this is. Any help would be much appreciated!

My first thought is some type of cherry. Older bark is starting to look that way.

Second thought might be birch, especially where you are...

I was first going to say black birch then I thought river birch. Am I close?? I'm sure the experts will be here shortly.

Are you close enough to go get a twig and see if it smells like wintergreen. That would be a dead giveaway for one of the birches.

There are some wild plumb trees in the vicinity but I hadn't considered that. Good one!

I was gonna say yellow birch when I saw the first picture, but can't be sure. Usually yellow birch has golden bark unless over mature.

If it's birch its black birch. Way too dark to be river or yellow birch.

It's a north facing hill that is always the last place to still have snow.

From the pictures I have seen on the mn dnr website it looks the most like buckthorn but I couldn't find a decent representation of a back birch to compare.

Looks like all the Black Cherry we have around here. Prunus serotina. Picture of the twigs would be helpful. Real bitter taste if you chew on the twig.

I have Gum in my yard that looks very similar to that.
