I was out with the kids sledding on our hill and realized I have no idea what kind of tree this is. Any help would be much appreciated! 20151206_105704.jpg20151206_105718.jpg

At first I thought River Birch but now I see the red under the bark and I'm thinking buckthorn also. Where do you live and still have that much snow on the ground?

I was gonna say yellow birch when I saw the first picture, but can't be sure. Usually yellow birch has golden bark unless over mature.

It's a north facing hill that is always the last place to still have snow.

From the pictures I have seen on the mn dnr website it looks the most like buckthorn but I couldn't find a decent representation of a back birch to compare.
