Oh yes. It just didn't occur to me that it might be buckthorn because I only ever see it when it's young and small. More like brush.
 
That looks a lot like my namesake... Buckthorn. I have a love/hate relationship with the stuff. It's all over my land and is invasive as heck. Makes decent firewood, though.
It isnt beneficial for wildlife (other than maybe cover) and can take over an understory very quickly.
If it has a bright orange sapwood and heartwood it is probably Buckthorn.

So if I whack a small branch off would it be orange inside?
