Yeah, don't do it. Stop by Tractor Supply and look at the Huskee (SpeeCo) 22-ton model. Consider $800 for half ownership of the Northstar or $1000 for full ownership of a Huskee 22-ton.

For 4-5 cords/year the Huskee is more than sufficient, and in some aspects it's better than the Northstar. It has a 14 second cycle time, is fully assembled, and includes hydraulic fluid.

Sharing a splitter is hard enough for relatatives that might live a couple minutes apart, strangers that might live 30-45 minutes apart is asking for trouble. I've got the 22t Huskee works great. Sometimes a 10% off coupon would bring it down to about $900 for full ownership
