Black Flies

Does anyone know of a repellent for black flies? I tried to look on the Internet and all I found was that there ISN'T any repellent that exists for black flies. They said DEET isn't effective. I would have to agree because i've tried it several times (DEET) with no success. They always seem to go for the head. I understand that is because they are attracted to dark colors and I have dark brown hair.

I've seen traps to rid your area of those pesky flies, but no repellent to actually spray yourself with. I have a few cords that I need to split, but have a difficult time convincing myself to do it because of those biting machines.
