This is for when you are rebuilding a saw and still have a good piston to work with. Get yourself a small glass jar and fill it halfway with lacquer thinner, put your piston in and leave it for a couple of days. The thinner will remove 99% of the carbon, it'll actually just fall off.
Some pictures of the results, the piston you see has not even had a toothbrush on it, just a paper towel to get the remainder of a thin carbon film on the top.
