It kinda looks more like red elm in those pictures, that split piece ain't very string though unless it's a real small one. Bark still looks thick to me too.

It's Elm. Only some of the smaller straight rounds split like this - a sharp wedge on the SuperSplit helps too. I still need a hatchet to release strings on larger rounds most of the time.

I yield, it's definitely not American elm seeing it still has color higher up and splits like that.

From 30+ acres of ravine land. All I'm allowed to cut is dead or dying trees so 95% of what I cut is Elm. Other stuff in the area is box elder, maple, butternut, black cherry, coffeetree, hickory, cottonwood, and just 1/4mile down the road a bunch of white oak. If it's not elm what could it be?
