i'm getting a ms 880 shipped to someone in canada(who will remain nameless) and i have about a day to figure this out so i need some advice. first of all, i've never shipped anything outside of the states so i don't know much about customs, but i paid up front at the UPS store. now they tell me i have to pay $299 for customs basically (taxes and document or something..sorry dont remember wewll but was outraged they didn't atleast mention this early on when i said it was going to canada) because the item "costs so much"... this plus the back and forth fee is alraedy half the price i paid for the saw. can someone tell me what's going on here and FAST... please call if you know exactly what's going on, cuz i have no experience with this kinda of stuff.

What kind of declared value did you put on the paper work?...Did you send it air or standard freight?...

Ship it "Duties and taxes to be paid by the recipient". Then it's on him. And for God's sake, don't declare the value of a used saw as anything more than $50. I don't think you'll need a commercial invoice that way. UPS will tell you everything you need to know about how to ship up north.

thanks..apparently thats what happend...i declared the value as a new saw....insert 2 minutes worth of profannity here...i didn't know they would charge me based on the insured value at customs....anyways...you think i can call them and ask to lower it it,,,, told the guy at the store it was a broken saw, and the box itself says repair and return, think i can lower it even though it's been sent off becuase i marked the value as a new saw as the gentleman said at the store????

I ship to canada two to four times a month..i use USPS when i can and fill out the little blue customs form..marked as "gift" and discribe contents as "xxx used parts" no problem.
when i use UPS i have never gone thru what you discribed..USA dont charge customs on the way out ! why would THEY collect for canada ??
sounds like somebody there dont have a clue..ask to speak to a manager..all YOU should get charged is for the weight to get it there..if canadian customs inspects it and disagrees on stated value that is up to the customer to settle.

I have in the past bought alot of saws out of the US. They had been no extra fees until last year. I no longer get any US saws.

Before saws sent to me marked gift or warranty work went thru. The last saw was marked repair and return and it cost me $200 to get it from customs. When I inquired why I was told that a certain # of parcels are picked out of the system and fees applied. If a border broker is used then fees are always added. Even Baileys is no longer a viable option unless it is something impossible to get here. The last Powermatch bar cost almost as much to ship as to buy.

I guess the good days are over.

Yeah, smuggling chainsaws/chainsaw parts is getting more and more difficult

No experience with Canadian Customs, but these things that have helped me import things into the UK. Marking the shipment "unsolicited gift". I know this might not be plausable if it's a brand new MS660, but you get the idea.

Send to more than one recipent at the same address "Mr & Mrs" or list several names, so that any tax exempt import allowance can be deducted from the taxable total for each recipient.

Shipping X-border

For simplicity's sake, if at all possible ship to Canada through the Post Office. That means USPS and not UPS.

UPS has a way of charging exorbitant brokerage and customs fees that sometimes add 50% or more to the actual cost of the goods. Crooks in my mind...

USPS charges fair rates for shipping and does not gouge at the border for anything.

In most cases you will have to ship USPS airmail which will cost more than UPS initially but in the end will likely be 30% less in total cost.

I learned this the hard way... several times.

First of all DO NOT USE UPS!!!!!!!! They will bend you over backwards, slather up your knothole with a whole tub a Vaseline and then well, you can figure the rest!!!!

USE USPS, way cheaper, once the saw gets to Canada, the recipient will have to pay brokerage fees as well. IF you can get it back do so!!!!! Then go to the USPS store and ship it.

I have shipped many thousands of dollars worth of chainsaws and parts both ways ,to and from the US and have narrowed it down to using USPS on parcels shipped to Canada from the US. Ship complete saws through Priority Mail International and mark the customs form as used chainsaw parts, take the bar and chain off and wrap them separately but put them in the same box. The receiver will have to pay a small duty fee if the declared value is over $200 but its nowhere close to what UPS or any of the other carriers will charge for a brokerage fee and duties when the receiver gets it on this end. I have tried every means of shipping and currently this is the fastest and least expensive.
As far as I know you can`t change what you declared the value as once it has been sent or picked up by UPS.

When shipping to the US from Canada, or to Canada from the US, always use USPS. If ordering online, just put the items in your cart and then call in your order so you can talk to someone and ensure that your order will be shipped via USPS.

Your wallet will thank you.

That's the key. Because of the declared value, they are adding broker services to your bill.

Does USPS have a weight limit on packages going to CA?

I sent some diesel injectors up north to a specialist shop by USPS and was told that my package was under the weight limit and was able to ship it... Weird? Also the max insured value was something like $680 on the customs declaration form that I filled out, a definite pain to ship things up north...

Obviously UPS is a bunch of diseased cretins. Period. POst office will likely get it there cheaper. Canadian customs kept harassing me about nonexistent guns in my car, threatening to confiscate my car is they found them. Arsewhole. I shoulda shot the prikk.

in the winter time I fab and sell snowmobile racks all over canada from Michigan . usps is the way to go . a low declaration value and insured rate tend to keep it below radar . and for whatever reason brown boxes get scrutinized much more than white boxes .items took a few less days to get to destinations in the same city when mailed at the same time jmhexperience
