I have a 268 SE I turned into a 272 by putting a 272 piston and barrel on a 268SE casing.
To make a long story short I noticed oil leaking out of the tank vent which is a pourous copper insert situated beneath the muffler on the left side of the casing just to the right of the oil filler cap.
What is this a symptom of and what would be a quick fix? I noticed the 272 casing doesn't have the same vent. Is the 272 vented thru the cap?
Is it an issue with the cap?
OK, I will **** now and wait patientlyfor an answer as I want to fix the saw.
So cough up now please!
Thanks in advance,
John

Good to see you back, your worshippers were getting nervous. Since you
are stihl playing around with those orange poulans, I refuse to try to help you.

Somehow I knew that an eclectic misfit would answer first.
Fish, do you always have to be the turd in the salad bowl?:)
BTW, what would fish smell like if women didn't go swimming?

Talk to the guy who did the work on the saw...

So how you been? Are you still peddling Viagra across North America?
You have several small bald children toddling about Ky., products of your
last visit. Can they qualify for Canadian health insurance? I need to know,
since that little kid is getting expensive. My wife fessed up, when he
came out of the womb with a Husqvarna hat on, and a Canadian beer
in his hand. The chainsaw came out with a c-section, and I knew it
was your work, kind of a neo-Galer file twist on the chain.

I'm pretty sure that the 272 vents between the bar studs. The only thing I can think of that would force oil up through that vent is if you have a leaking crankcase gasket forcing air into the oil tank.

I'm hoping there was a simpler cause for the leakage. The oiler wasn't pumping like it should, but there is no sign of a leaking gasket, ie., no oil leaking anywhere after it has been sitting for any length of time.
I'll check to see if there is an additional vent between the bar studs as well.
I couldn't open the file, however thanks for helping.

This copper thing was the only vent on this 268,they changed it later for a vent close to the bar studs like on 272.The leaking copper insert was a "feature"on older Husky and Jonny, there is not really a cure for that.If the crankcase gasket was leaking, your engine would be smoking heavily.Sometimes we removed the insert and tap the top portion with a small hammer to bring it less porous.

I wish that was all of my 268 problems...Mine blew up today. Big end bearing seized and sent bearing shrapnel through the piston and cylinder. Lots of carnage. Bummer,as I had plans for it.....

Thanks for the reply Octane, I may have inadvertantly done that when I tapped it flush with the casing, but will tap more.

Judging from the IPLs, the new oil tank vent appeared on the 268xp some time early 1990 or late 1989, and the new starter house design about a year later.
The 272xp and the non-xp 268 had the new vent and starter housing from the outset.

 What puzzles me here, is that you are referring to your saw as a 268SE. There was a SE version of the 266 and a lot of other models, but I have never before heard or read about a 268SE.
As far as I know, the 268 was a xp from the outset in 1987, and they had stopped using the SE designation when the non-xp variant appeared.

Is the number plate present on your saw?
If so, what are the first four digits in the serial number?

Hi SawTroll, I just went and checked and yes the 268 is in fact an SE.
The serial # is 7350104. The hex bolts that hold down the cylinder are an odd ball size as anything metric I had didn't fit. I had to customize one to R&R.
Regardless, it's a nice lil saw now with the modified barrel on it. I also followed Hi Octanes lead and solved the leak by gently tapping the porous end of the vent and it quit leaking. Glad it wasn't a gasket issue though

Oh well then, another little piece in the puzzle ...., except that this one doesn't quite fit ....  .....at least not with the IPL "library" at Huskys web-site.

Anyway, the serial number, combined with the fact that it has the old-style oil-tank vent indicates that the saw was made in 1987, week 35.

Here is an old (2003) post by Ken Dunn, that also mention the 268 se:

... Heres the carb no. off of a 268 that i have,260-a-540 tillotson. they produced a 268 se and a 268 xp that were closed loop models. they also made a 268 model that was a open loop model. The transfer ports were lower and the intake and exhaust ports were narrower but if you modified them to the same configuration as you set the closed loop model they ran just as strong. enclosed a photo of the open loop model. The closed loop model barrel is made by mahle of germany and the open loop model is built by gilardoni in italy
