450**** that's my bad. I'm at the office and forgot which saw it was. Looked up the pic. Its a 450, not a 455.

Hi. I'm stupid.

Need to sharpen the chain on the 372. I have a box of files I bought for the 450 (not the Rancher if that matters). Can I use the same files?

Survey says no?

You needed 7/32" files. 3/8 is the chain pitch. Same file for both.
yea, I made another mistake. Its a 450. Not a 455. So that's the 3/16 file. So I did buy the correct files for that saw. The 372 is going to take the 7/32 files.

I should probably just delete this thread and start again, haha.

Lol, it's OK. You need 2 different size files is all. The 450 should have .325 pitch chain, and the 372 will shave 3/8 pitch chain. So 3/16 for the .325 and 7/32 for the 3/8 chain.
cool beans. pitch doesn't matter with the file then, correct?

I will throw a cheeky spanner in the works and suggest you can sharpen a 3/8 chain with a 3/16 file.
It is not ideal and you have to have a bit of an idea of what you are doing- but it is entirely possible to do so.
It is certainly not as easy to go the other way and sharpen the smaller .325 chain teeth with the larger 7/32 file though. :innocent:

yea, I'll just grab another set of files. I don't use the 372 very often, so this is the first time I had to think about files.

I have, ahem, heard of someone who used a big 1/4? Inch .404 file to sharpen a .325 chain when he was in a pinch. It worked ok, but I would not recommend it in the future. Kinda like piston letters/sizes, you can put a medium size in both a large and a small bore, but try a small in a large or vice versa and you’ll run into trouble.

Certainly, go get a triple pack of good files that suit the chain.
I was NOT suggesting you do it- was just saying it IS possible (but not ideal).
