Ok, I've seen the questions asked on here and elsewhere before, but I've never really found a sufficient answer until now. Yes there are some small differences in the newer 137 and 142 vs. the older 136 and 141, but here's the big difference... The 137 and 142 both came with the catalytic muffler - the same one that came on the 136LE and 141LE (low emissions) models, resulting in lower power on the newer saws. Therefore, the older 136 and 141 are, in my opinion, better saws than the newer 137 and 142 because they produce more power in a nearly identical package.

Good news for 137 and 142 owners... it's really easy (and cheap - $10 on ebay) to get a 136/141 non-cat muffler and swap it for your restrictive muffler. A little adjustment on the carb afterwards and you'll feel an appreciable difference in the way your little saw performs!
