Check to see if your local Home Cheapo is selling any of their rental Makitas off. I've heard of people getting them for $250.

If a Makita is a possibility, check out their outlet at http://www.cpomakita.com/chain_saws/. Right now they have a 50cc saw with 18" bar for $370. They also carry refurbs but don't have any in that range at the moment.
