Maple with red leaves in N.E.?

Well now,a little question about red leaves,if you please.If I recall from high school biology,the process of photosynthesis,causes chlorophyll in the plant tissues,thus a normal green coloration.Where,or why are the leaves of these trees reddish in color.I have also seen a tree with an oak type leaf that has a purple tint to it.
 
I just planted a Crimson Sentry (Norway maple variety) last year.

It will be interesting to grow. They seem fairly tidy from the one's I have seen here. It's just a matter of getting new growth to compensate for the hacking the nursery guys do to retain all those trees in compact rows.
