As per title...it will tick over until it runs out of fuel but full throttle and it sometimes dies. Other days it can run all day without a problem. Blipping the throttle and it will run fine. It's just when on full throttle and maybe 40% of the time.

Any ideas what's up?

It’s a late 2017 saw...so never. I have eyeballed it a few times but I guess that doesn’t mean it is good. I will change it.

I like cheap and easy remedies so keep them coming :numberone:

Check the electrical connection between the solenoid valve and the control unit. Also check the micro switch. Maybe a broken wire. If there is no connection to the valve no spark is initiated. It doesn`t sound that it is going lean before it dies. In the past there was a test lead for testing that, but it is NLA. Bring the saw to your dealer and have it checked there with the diagnostic tool.

I ran into a MS661C that had about the same problem. Resetting did not fix the problem, but you should try that if you haven't already. A new ignition module solved it. That part, unfortunately, is not cheap. Not many parts on the Mtronics are cheap.

Thank you...that is a few avenues to explore when I get some time at the lockup. The saw ran perfectly today :dizzy:

OK, resetting it sounds like a plan. I’ll dig out the owners manual and see if it tells me how to do so...failing that I am sure a quick search on here will tell me what I need to know.
Tbh I don’t mind if the saw costs me a bit, it’s been faultless up to now and nothing can work perfectly forever....IIRC the saw is on its second bar now.
Thanks for the help

From the manual, but I cannot guarantee it will do anything for you, especially if the IM has to be replaced:

How To Perform An M-Tronic Reset

  1. Remove the scabbard.
  2. Put the machine in the ▲ Cold start position.
  3. Start the machine and run it in the ▲ Cold start position for at least 90 seconds.
  4. Do not touch the throttle or accelerate the saw during this time.
  5. After 90 seconds, switch off the machine.
  6. Your machine is now re-calibrated and ready for operation.

Thank you

Stihl M-Tronics Reset Procedure
1. With the chain brake engaged…
a. Hold throttle and set start lever to Start position (Δ)
b. Start saw and let idle in Start position (Δ) for 90 seconds
c. Blip throttle to bring the machine to the Run position (I)
d. Immediately move lever to Stop position (O)
e. This will reset the carb to original factory setting.

2. With the chain brake engaged…
a. Hold throttle and set start lever to Start position (Δ)
b. Start saw then Blip throttle to bring the machine to the Run position (I)
c. Let idle in Run position (I) for 90 seconds
d. Immediately move lever to Stop position (O)
e. This will calibrate the idling characteristics of the saw.

3. With the chain brake engaged…
a. Hold throttle and set start lever to Start position (Δ)
b. Start saw then Blip throttle to bring the machine to the Run position (I)
c. Disengage chain brake and make five uniform cuts through a minimum 12-inchdiameter
log.
d. This will calibrate the full throttle characteristics of the saw.
