I saw where a couple of you were looking for info on running a standard carb and MaxFlow air filter on the MS661C. I posted this info back in November, but the thread went sideways and was locked. So, here it is again.

FYI, I was not the first to run a standard carb. There was a guy on Facebook that posted about it first. Other guys here on AS ran a MaxFlow before I did.

All you need is a MS660/066 carb. It'll bolt right up. You'll need to remove the solenoid from the MTronic carb and leave it connected to the wiring harness. If not, the saw will fire, sense a problem, and shut right off. With the solenoid connected it runs just fine. No other mods are required.

Running a MaxFlow filter is just about as easy. I took a stock MS661 HD2 filter and modified it to work with the MaxFlow element. Even with this much material removed, it's still very stable.

If you choose to run without the factory filter cover, you can simply remove the black knob. However, you MUST add a thick washer underneath the knob in order for it to hold the filter tight. That's it. Easy peasy.

Kudos to Mrs S. for the camera work:)

Looks like it would filter better than the original

This looks to simple and easy to be true lol, some guys have been searching the ends of the globe to find the illussive factory standard non MT 661 carb. Now for the important info, how much better/worse does the 661 run with standard carb, can you lean it out and achieve better cut times than the MT setup? Good info Brad!

I didn't spend enough time with the setup to fully answer that question. However, I don't think you'll make it run much if any better than MTronic. The saw I was working on turned out to have a bad harness and I was desperate to make it run right in the mean time. Once fixed, I'd just as soon let MTronic do it's thing.

Great info, thanks, so if you have the WJ69 off the 660 you can just block or seal off the intellicarb air inlet?

Here in Germany we only have the MS 661 C-M, we don`t have the non m-tronic version.

My mistake. I wrote wrong.
Anyway, interesting how Sthil sells his equipment.
And in Ukraine/Russia they are cheap too.
The 661 in Ukraine is about 550$-600$ from what I could find.
