Thought I would give a holz hausen a try. This one is about 6 foot high by 6 foot wide, which by my calcs is about 1.3 cords.

Do you think it's sturdy enough to withstand a couple obese cats jumping & climbing on it?

I thought it was pretty sturdy...at first. I took this right after I made it and it was leaning slightly to the right, after a few days it is leaning slightly to the left now. If it falls, this is my last experiment with Holz Hausen. For stacking 1.3 cords in this thing it took me about 4 hours. I can stack a ton more than that in wind rows in the same amount of time.

The good thing is my wife likes it though and was actually excited about having wood to build another one. Before seeing this she insisted I needed to get rid of some of my firewood.

Could someone please explain the concept of the HH. Only thing I can thing of is it might save space. It looks like the inside of the pile would have limited air flow also to aid in curing of the wood.

Being of German descent, it is easy to explain. With a known love of all things beer, you must stack your wood in a manner to allow for optimal beer consumption. Every time you stack a row around the holz hausen you are back at your beer. Were you to stack in a simple row, the more you stack the farther you get from your beer. Very simple logic... ;)

MNGuns, that's some beautiful logic. In fact, I'll drink to that!

Not only does the HH seem to take too much time to build, I wouldn't want to have to get on a step ladder to start taking wood off the pile.

Very nice. I just finished my first one. I'm with on the effort involved. At least your wife really likes it. My wife would still rather not see the wood in the yard no matter how pretty I try and make it. Come winter I'll have to pry her away from the stove though. C'est la vie.

My wife really liked it and asked when I was going to build one like the picture I showed her that was 10ft by 10ft. I told her I would attempt it if she helped me. She is not interested anymore.
