I have an ID number on a stihl saw believed to be a 390 but seems to have more features then the 390's I've seen. AV + heated handles + other misc stuff. Wondering if their is any way of ID'n it from the serial number? Please help me if poss asap. Thanks

Josh

I can't decode a serial # for ya, but 039's never came with heated handles. The only 3X stihl saws that came with a heated handle version were an 034, 036, and 038 to my knowledge and these are rare.

I've been hoping this is a 36 and that's what I'm leaning toward however the outside case is worn off with no readable numbers. no plate on top of the saw. Only a "vin" number for this saw and the 24" bar that was mounted on it. I'm hoping someone can help shed some light on this as I would love to get lucky for once. S/N# starts as 26828 if that helps? I can give the whole number but don't wanna break any rules on posting identification of a saw that doesn't yet belong to me.

Here's a question. Did the MS 390 or 039 ever come with the AV springs? I've seen them with rubber grommet mounts myself but springs? and fuel tank handle is another feature of this saw. Ever on the 390 or 39?

I have put this up before but it has been a while so here it is again:
SERIES MODEL

1106 090

Every Stihl model is part of a series that gets assigned a series number when it goes into the R & D phase and if it makes it to production. Any parts unique to that series will have the first four numbers of the part number as the series number.
So look on the bottom of the tank housing and you will see an 11 digit number. If it starts with 1125 then the saw is a 034, 036. If it starts with 1127 it is a 029 039. And so on.
Some parts will carry over from one saw to another, and the number on the part may not be the actual part number of the replacement part, so don't try to order a part without looking it up on a current IPL.
So let us know what saw you have, MM.

Fantastic information thank you so much. I'll find out at around 10am what saw I might be the owner of. Still hoping 36 or 361 and about 79% sure that's what it's real identity is. Wish me luck!

Ok well I bought the saw today. It turns out it is a MS 361. Had # 1135 listed as the first 4 digits. I'm so happy! it's a little rough but nothing a little cash can't fix. Runs perfect! Pics to come Got a great price on this saw as well.

Did somebody just let the cat out'a da bag.

Boy I sure hope the other saws listed are getting better and not the other way around.

Looks that way - but not sure I like what I see there, regarding pro vs lesser saws (traditionally) - looks like the differences will be smaller, but what way???????? :censored:
