If you are going to be using the 361 as a backyard saw or casual cutter, then don't worry about feeding it viagra with mods, etc. Its great saw just as it is; and, as the rings set, the power will increase as you go through the first few tanks of fuel.

WT?

which of your 361's do you like better?

Na. The most important spare part to carry is ANOTHER saw!

+1 on that. I carry a spare 290, but I have a hankering to buy another 361. Then no need to have the spare chain, nuts, sprocket clips, or anything else that rarely breaks... but just in case! ...have a spare 361 with a different size bar handy. That's a Home Simpson wiggly finger "Oooooohhhh..."

As for chaps, I use the Stihl orange ones. They work fine. Only one small tear in them, so far. Along with gloves, hard hat, ear plugs, eye protection, leather boots or shoes, and also... wedges. As Erick said, get yourself a pair of 6-8 inch red or orange plastic falling wedges, and carry a maul or one sided ax to bang them in with. 2 wedges are best; they can be stacked in a wide gap, and I tend to smack in 2 behind the saw in a back cut when felling larger trees.

Ah, and welcome to the 361 club! And AS! And I presume that you got a Stihl hat with your saw. Oh, and don't forget to ask Gary what kind of oil to use in your mix.

As for bars and chains... I use solid GB and Stihl bars on my larger saws. I do not like the laminated ones. Solid bars hold well if the tree rocks back and pinches the bar. I have tipped trees (with wedges, or the tractor) with the saw and bar stuck in the back cut and I have never had so much as a dent in a solid bar.

As for chains... they do not make RM2 safety chain any more. I keep that stuff for crappy wood and cutting in the dirt and stuff. Also makes for good backup loops. I typically use RM (rapid micro) for all-around cutting, and I prefer the semi chisel cutting edges. They stay sharper longer, and cut good. I also have RMF (RM full skip) on my longer bars (20 and 24 inch). You will not need any skip on a 361 with an 18 inch bar.

The best protective pants from Stihl, Husky and Jred are all about 400$ here (same thing really, between the brands), and well worth the price - the pants (or chaps) are the most important PPE - then the boots - then whatever suits what you do.....

As an exemple, I don't care about a hard hat, as I allmost exclusively cut healthy hardwood.

The ones I referred to aren't just "good quality" - they are state of the art....

ST, Swede Pro makes Stihls PPE and the summer pants like I wear are $87.00 here, and I got mine for $76.00, for $400.00 I could damn near buy a pair for every day of the week. Sounds like it's time for mail order Niko

WANAB asked: WT? which of your 361's do you like better?

I've been using the Big Dave saw for several years and its my primary work saw.
I usually only take an 026 and his 361 to the woods. I cut with two other fellows and we fill up a 12 foot trailer in just over an hour. At 78 my cutting days are short. ha. But we go often.

I've been saving the Ehp 361 for competition and fun; it is the newest and the last one modified. I only take it to the woods now and then to give it a work out. Performance wise, they are very close.

You are 78 and still out in the woods cutting? Thats awesome. No age pun intended, lol

OK its getting way too deep in here. Does the 361 cure global warming too?

I have been musing over this question, and I have come to the conclusion that:

Yes, Al Gore, the 361 does cure global warming!

Why? Simple. The wood in a tree has far more carbon energy tied up in it than the gas in the 361 to cut it down and buck it up. That tree spent its entire life sucking up CO2 from the atmosphere and releasing oxygen. When the tree is milled into lumber, that wood is going into a house or a building that will be there for what, at least 100 years? In that case, the carbon will be locked up for at least 100 years, rather than being released into the atmosphere to warm things up.

So yah, a 361 does cure global warming!

You are what I hope to be. If I'm still in the woods at 78, I'll be happier than a dog rolling in :censored:.

This one's to you!!

The protective pants available in Europe do seem to be "better" than in the US. I paid 350 USD for some Stihl all round protective pants and wouldn't be without them now.

God bless you if you can still get into the woods at 78. if i can make it to 68 i will be a happy camper.

glad you like your saws.

ENJ0Y! :greenchainsaw:

Sure does! However ya have to do the Lakerized™ Muffler Mod, richen up the fuel mixture, and slap a Magnum™ sticker on the shroud to get the full-on global warming effect going.

Ok, I have the muffler, but I lack the sticker...... :censored:

I didn't know it was nessessary....... :jawdrop: :jawdrop: :jawdrop:

Actually, I am not, really, I am a big man - just responding to others that are - and we have to discuss something, aren't we......

Finding the right balance with the bar is more my real thing.....

We have heated handles on most saws, and that sure adds some weight......:greenchainsaw:
