So here is a summry for the lazy guys:

4 is the highest point, 1 the lowest.

power weight vibration fuel efficiency
440: 2 4 2 2
441: 1 2 3 4
460: 4 1 1 1
372: 3 3 4 3

Total score:
440: 10
441: 10
460: 7
372: 13

The one thing I don't know about is the fuel economy 440 vs 372, if the 440 win that round, we would have 440: 11 points. 372: 12 points.

What everyone already knows: The 372 is the best 70cc saw on the market.

How is the 441 less powerful than the 372 and 440? How is it less smooth than the 372?

I don't consider a saw with a powerband like the 372 has to be the best at anything. I can't imagine using one with a long bar. Most people seem to agree that it's good for a 20" bar in hardwood and not much more.

I couldn't agree with you...less here, Peacock. My red & black 372 wears a 24" bar pretty much all the time now, and it gets buried to the tip in ash, oak, and rock maple all the time without missing a beat. Noodling, too.

My have times changed! I still have my 1986 Stihl 064 in my worksaw lineup , got a few thousand hrs on it and never split the crankcase. This very first year 064 was advertised at 85 cc and 14.1 lbs!!!! Lighter then the 441 and 460! With all the power any man would need for any job.

PS ,I still run my 1989 044 , hyper little saw ,never let me down, only beef is the carb icing up in sub zero winter weather. My 064 with the winter kit always ran fine even down to 35 below. My redlight 066 magnum Artic has a heated carb so it doesn't need a kit. I know my early 044 has a lighter bottom end which gives it good revs but never heard of it having huge ports.

That is amazing. Sounds like the 064 was/is the saw to have.
Wonder if there are any 064 owners who want to trade for an 056 Mag 2....

No offense Peter, but that is one of the dumbest comparisons I've ever seen.

I think it all boils down to personal preference and intended usage. The 372 is a great saw and is a fantastic saw for those that use it, but to compare it to a 460 is a joke. Might as well compare it to a 880 and say that the 880 is too heavy, uses too much fuel, and vibrates the living hello out of you. Who cares that it would be the most powerful.

Although a "tweaked" 372 may pull ahead of a stock 440 or 441, stock all three are pretty close. If you are cutting pecker poles the 372 would probably blow the socks off the Stihl's mentioned. Start burying longer bars (28"+) in big wood. I would probably give the 440 a slight edge up as far as power and the 441 a little more than that. A 372xpw on the other hand I have not used although I believe it to have a bit more power than the standard 372xp.

As it has already been stated these saws run differently one from another. The Stihl's tend to have a bit more grunt while the Husky really winds up and is quick and agile.

By the way, why hasn't the 575xp been mentioned? Isn't it the one to compare to the 441?

064 at 14.1 lbs sounds amazing doesn't it? Check out the early 064s specs on the net for your self. No I would never trade my 064 for a dinosaur 056.

I have used a 064 and really like it( this coming from a Jred head)I would like to compare it side to side with my 7900 Dolmar. I know the Dolmar is smoother. But to me the 064 seemed to weigh about the same?

Stihl added alot weight to the 064 around 1990 [about 1 1/2 lbs], bigger bottom end, flywheel, rewind cover, sprocket cover and a few other upgrades. It's obvious they were building up for the newer 066. But like my 1986 064 owners manual says 14.1 lbs. I also got a old 1986 Chainsaw Age magazine where there is a promo that says Stihl introduces the next generation 064 AVEQ at 14.1 and 85cc, but then a year later in 1997 the 064 is advertised at 14.9 lbs, thats when the weight gain started. So to find a 14.1 064 you will have to find one of the very first ones.

Hmmm.....I wonder what was gained with the extrs 12+ ounces. Stronger case?

:agree2: :agree2: :agree2: :agree2:

Yah, this scoring makes about as much sence as some of the results in the olympics that I have watched on TV.

Actually, the 441 has MORE power than either the 440 or the 372 at 5.5 bhp vs 5.4 for the other two (from manufacture's specs). Also the 441 should rate a 5 for smooth. And if you want biased judging, I would say that the 440 is king of chainsaws in the central Orygun logging business. Hands down. Also Ekka climbs with a 440 down under. Only saw he uses for that. Talk about macho stud kind of stuff.

I happen to have a 441 and a 440; neither have been modded.

If someone has a 372 close by, I would be happy to meet them at a place where I have some 22" + Red Oak and 24"+ American Beech ready to be blocked. The wood has been seasoning in log form for over a year and should be a good test.

I even have a couple of new Stihl chains I would be glad to throw on my saws for the runs.

Congrats on your most retarded post of 2008. You and woodie have claimed the 2171/372 is the best 70cc out. Well guess what 2K bought, yep a 2171. I have a fresh cut 26" oak log waiting for the 440 and 2171. I have a new bar on order and the 2171 will be ready to cut. I will make this a fair duel by using the same chain and both mufflers ported. So far my thoughts on the 2171.....cheap. Although I'm not going to call it a complete pos, now or after because I know it is a decent saw. I'm even going to give woodie the first shot at buying the jewel.:D

So look for the upcoming thread........I have a bad feeling we will hear more crying from the woodie worse than on Scott's Dolmar thread.:ices_rofl:

Make sure you have someone who knows how to handle a saw run the 2171.

I'm comfortable with the 440 in your hands, though.

Dont lean on the 2171 like you do on a Stihl......

Holy s**t, your giving the 460 one's in 3 out of 4 categories. Must be a real POS, might as well toss mine. Boy do I feel stupid for buying one of those :sucks:

Or is it....It cant take it.........

Not the case at all. It doesn't need it. Good tools reward great skill with outstanding results. So Jred/Huskies reward talent and ability.

Whereas even 2K can run a Stihl. Or you... :D :D :D

Woodie...makin' it PERsonal!! j/k
