I've been thinking we need to go to a prepay on special orders system - a lot of them just never get picked up. I also think we should be able to charge people half hour to look at their stuff. I get people bringing in garbage that I have to waste my time just to tell them it's not worth fixing and make $0.

I ran a small electronics sale/repair business for 28 years. Started out giving free estimates on repairs. 28 years later it was a $50 deposit, which was applied toward the estimate if you approved it. If you declined the estimate we kept the $50 for our time.

Weeded out all the cheapskates. Stopped people from bringing in items that were cheap junk when brand new.
 
Exactly what I wish we could do. We have probably a dozen Remington trimmers just collecting dust. ~$50 to fix a $70 trimmer. People just abandon them at our shop.
Big box small engine repair, it definitely has its drawbacks
